Floating Photovoltaics: Assessing the Potential, Advantages, and Challenges of Harnessing Solar Energy on Water Bodies

Ayman Amer,
Hani Attar,
Samer As’ad
et al.

Abstract: The worldwide transition to a future with net-zero emissions depends heavily on solar energy. However, when land prices rise, and population density rises, the need for large land expanses to develop solar farms poses difficulties. Floating Photovoltaics (FPV) has come to light as a viable remedy to this problem. FPV, which includes mounting solar panels on bodies of water, is gaining popularity as a practical choice in many nations worldwide. A significant capacity of 404 GWp for producing clean energy might … Show more

“…They also mentioned that agrivoltaics decrease the evapotranspiration rate in crops reducing the water demand for irrigation which is important in areas with water scarcity. The advantages and the challenges of FPV have been studied [21]. The authors stated that if 1% of the surface of the world's water reservoirs will be covered by FPV the installed solar power would be increased by 404 GWp.…”

“…The current-voltage (I-V) characteristic provides valuable insights into how a solar cell responds to variations in applied voltage and current. Analyzing the I-V curve is essential for evaluating the electrical efficiency of the cell and determining its capacity to convert sunlight into electrical energy [3][4].…”

“…The strategic deployment of solar panels on water surfaces, encompassing reservoirs, lakes, and ponds, represents a salient approach to alleviating conflicts arising from land-use constraints 2 [2]. FPV technology presents an avenue for harnessing renewable energy within pre-existing aquatic environments, thereby imparting a dual purpose to these sites without necessitating additional terrestrial land resources [3].…”
