Flavonoids from Ulex airensis and Ulex europaeus ssp. europaeus

Abstract: From the dichloromethane extract of Ulex airensis three new isoflavonoids, ulexin C (1), ulexin D (2), and 7-O-methylisolupalbigenin (3), were isolated and characterized by spectroscopic methods. Ulexin D (2) was also identified from the dichloromethane extract of Ulex europaeus ssp. europaeus. Together with these new metabolites, 18 compounds of previously known structures were isolated and identified from both species. The antifungal activity of these compounds was tested against Cladosporium cucumerinum by … Show more

“…Isowighteone has been proven to be both antibacterial (Hatano et al, 2000) and antifungal (Ingham, 1990;Máximo et al, 2002;Queiroz et al, 2002;Hostettmann et al, 2005). However, it is expensive to extract directly from plant materials because of its low level.…”

“…The known prenylated isoflavones derrone (2), 19 alpinum isoflavone (3), 19,20 and wighteone (4), 18 were identified by comparing their NMR data with those reported in the literature. Derrone (2) and alpinum isoflavone (3) are isomers, possessing isoprenyl groups linked at C-8 and C-6, respectively.…”

“…Notably, the high content of extractives (6.6%) was larger than in normal industrial biomass resources. This could be attributed to the high content of tannins, flavonoids, and isoprenoids (Cao et al 1997;Máximo et al 2002) in Ulex. This was part of a larger process aimed at using supercritical fluids for the pre-processing of this otherwise unused biomass.…”

“…The fibres were therefore made of small Iβ domains embedded in an amorphous matrix (Atalla and Vanderhart 1984). This microstructure had a direct influence on the intrinsic properties (Gardner and Blackwell 1974;Atalla and Vanderhart 1984;Sugiyama et al 1991;Wada et al 1993;Cao et al 1997;Máximo et al 2002;Nishiyama et al 2002;Dimmel and Gellerstedt 2009;Leppänen et al 2009;Poletto et al 2014). The change in crystallinity was probably due to the growth of those domains accelerated by the heat involved in the fibreboard consolidation (Salmén 2004).…”
