Fixed-Bed Adsorption of Lead from Aqueous Solution Using Chitosan-Coated Bentonite

Abstract: In this study, fixed-bed adsorption of Pb(II) from an aqueous solution using chitosan-coated bentonite (CCB) was investigated. Characterization of CCB was performed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The effects of varying bed height (1.3 to 4.3 cm), flow rate (0.20 to 0.60 mL/min), and initial concentration (500 to 1500 mg/L) on the length of mass transfer zone (Zm) and adsorption capacity at breakthrough (qb) and exhaustion (qe) were examined. Low fl… Show more

“…This is because a higher bed height would enhance the adsorption capacity since more binding sites and functional groups would be accessible for pollutant molecules to be absorbed by the adsorbent. Furthermore, raising the bed height will provide enough contact time for organic contaminants to be absorbed on the adsorbent surface (Futalan and Wan 2022). A proportional relationship was seen between the Yoon-Nelson constant and bed height.…”

“…Furthermore, it was observed from these results that the earlier the breakthrough occurred, the higher the initial solution concentration. Futalan and Wan [27] observed the same behavior, noting that increased bed height resulted in more time for breaking through and exhaustion. Nevertheless, the fixed-bed system achieved a breakthrough and was depleted more rapidly as the initial concentration increased.…”

“…As one of the diazo class dyes, the form of the Congo red dye molecule in the aqueous solution will be affected by the pH value. As mentioned in [12,13], the color of Congo red dye changed significantly from red to dark blue when the pH of the solution was reduced to 2. On the other hand, when the pH of Congo red dye solution was adjusted to be more than 10, its color was different from the original.…”
