Fish Farming Effects on Chemical and Microbial Variables of the Water Column: A Spatio-temporal Study Along the Mediterranean Sea

Abstract: The effects of fish farming on chemical and biological variables of the water column were investigated in three coastal locations along the Mediterranean (Spain, Italy and Greece). Analyses of nutrients, chlorophyll a, particulate organic carbon and nitrogen (POC and PON), heterotrophic bacteria and cyanobacteria (Synechococcus) were carried out on integrated samples (0-30 m depth) taken at various distances from fish farms and the respective reference sites. At one of these sites, water samples were collected… Show more

“…Dialysis bags of 500 ml volume (diameter 6.5 cm, molecular weight cut-off of 6 kDa, made from Spectra Por 1 dialysis membrane) were deployed at 0, 30, 80, 200 and 500 m from a fish farm (1000 t annual production of sea bream and sea bass, feeding rate of ca 2000 t of fish feed per year) in Sitia, Crete (east Mediterranean, Fig. 1 (Pitta et al 2006). Sea water used for the experiment was sampled from a reference site, located 1 km upstream of the fish farm, at 1 m depth.…”

“…Indeed, water column parameters are often not correlated with the extent of benthic impact. This negligible effect in the pelagic system has been attributed to the important diluting effect of the sea (Pitta et al, 2006), to the rapid grazing of planktonic ciliates (Pitta et al, 2009) or to the 6 The analysis of biofilms enables medium term rather than momentary states of the studied ecosystem (Brummer et al, 2003). Therefore, biofilms could provide the "memory" of disturbance that the water column seems to lack.…”
