Abstract: This study was the first investigation of communities and infracommunities of parasites of Hemibrycon surinamensis. All the fish collected in a tributary of the Amazon river were parasitized by one or more parasite species. The Brillouin diversity index (HB) was 0.46 ± 0.28 and the mean species richness was 3.5 ± 1.2 parasites per host. A total of 14,734 parasites were collected, including Ichthyophthirius multifiliis and Piscinoodinium pillulare (Protozoa); Jainus hexops and Tereancistrum sp. (Monogenoidea); … Show more

“…ucayalensis, H. unimaculatus, S. gibbus, G. proximus, A. falcirostris and P. falcata showed an aggregated dispersion, a typical pattern for parasitic crustacean species of freshwater fish (Hoshino, Hoshino, & Tavares-Dias, 2014;Tavares-Dias et al, 2015). In contrast, there was a random dispersion of E. turucuyus in A. falcirostris and of E. berbicensis in S. gibbus.…”

“…No correlation of prevalence and abundance of these limnological parameters was found for S. gibbus and H. unimaculatus (Table 6). (Acácio et al, 2012;Luque et al, 2013;Tavares-Dias et al, 2015), and E. turucuyus (Malta & Varella, 1996;Luque et al, 2013;Hoshino, Hoshino, & Tavares-Dias, et al, 2014) have been recorded in fish species from Amazon. E. berbicensis is a parasite that is only slightly known in freshwater fish.…”

“…Examples include Ichthyophthirius multifiliis which is responsible for white spot disease in freshwater fishes (Abdel-Hafez et al, 2014;Forwood et al, 2014;Fu et al, 2014;Hoshino et al, 2014), and various species of scuticociliates that cause a range of diseases (collectively termed 'scuticociliatosis') in economically important host organisms Jin et al, 2010;Zhan et al, 2014).…”
