It was supposed that the current records of Amolops ricketti might be a species complex composed of multiple species. In this study, on the basis of wide sampling, we found that the records of A. ricketti from Yunnan, China, and northern Vietnam actually represent a cryptic species based on morphological and molecular evidence. Amolops shihaitaoisp. nov. can be distinguished from other members of the A. ricketti species group by its moderate body size (SVL 35.5‒37.3 mm in males and 39.2‒45.7 mm in females); white spines on the temporal region, loreal region, snout, and lips in breeding males but absent in females; overlapping heels; tibiotarsal articulation reaching tip of snout; indistinct longitudinal glandular folds on the skin of the shoulders; presence of supernumerary tubercles below the base of fingers II‒IV, distinct pineal body; presence of vomerine teeth; and absence of vocal sacs. Phylogenetic analysis supports that the new species is sister to Amolops yatseni and the populations from Jingxi, Guangxi and Lào Cai, Vietnam previously reported as A. yatesni also belong to it. Additionally, our results indicate that more cryptic species may exist within the A. ricketti species group, implying that more studies are needed to achieve a complete understanding of the species diversity of this group.

We provide a taxonomic update of the herpetofauna of the Ke Go Nature Reserve, Ha Tinh province, north-central Vietnam, 20 years after the book release “The amphibians and reptiles of a lowland forest reserve in Vietnam”. In this work, Ziegler (2002) recorded 31 amphibians and 57 reptiles. Since then 30 changes in the generic assignment of species took place, five of six unnamed identifications could be solved, three unclear identifications clarified, and 12 taxa were newly described. This review has not only significance for updated names of taxa listed in the book and follow-up papers, but also for conservation. Reviews and descriptions resulted in taxa with more restricted distributions, such as, e.g., Gekko reevesii (formerly G. gekko, listed on CITES Appendix II and in the Red Data Book) and Pelodiscus variegatus (formerly P. sinensis, listed in the IUCN Red List, and split off taxa on CITES Appendix II). More species meanwhile are listed as threatened (in total 25), and for some of them, the threat status has increased in the meantime. In addition to the 88 amphibian and reptile species recorded by Ziegler (2002), three further records are added herein, resulting in 91 proven species. There is also evidence for the occurrence of 10 further reptile species, which would increase the herpetofauna list to 101. One half of these 10 additional reptile species are threatened which would increase the threatened herpetofauna to 30 species. This highlights the need for improved conservation, both concerning the official protection status of so far not yet officially listed threatened taxa and IUCN’s One Plan Approach conservation, covering in situ conservation measures and ex situ conservation breeding approaches. Representing one of Vietnam’s last remaining lowland forests with a high biodiversity and conservation value, the Ke Go Nature Reserve highly deserves reinforced conservation measures.

The species belongs to the family Rhacophoridae, consisting of 434 species in 22 genera. The genus Polypedates Tschudi (1838) currently includes 25 nominal species and has a distribution ranging from eastern India throughout much of southeastern Asia (Frost 2022). According to Dinesh et al. (2020) and Frost (2022), the genus includes 13 species from India, two of which (P. teraiensis and P. braueri) occur in Mizoram.Polypedates mutus is a cryptic species that was removed from the synonymy of the P. leucomystax complex by Liu and Hu (1961). These treefrogs inhabit broadly disturbed habitats with shrub or tree borders (Zug 2022). Their distribution ranges from mainland (Bago, Kachin, Shan) and peninsular (Tanitharyi) Myanmar through adjacent southern China, northern Laos, northern Thailand, and Vietnam (Frost 2022;Kuraishi et al. 2012). Liu et al. ( 2018) described call characteristics that differ from its congener, P. megacephalus. The species is listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species as being of Least Concern (LC) (IUCN SSC Amphibian Specialist Group 2022). The species is diagnosable based on the combination of characters provided by Smith (1940), Pham et al. (2017), and Ziegler et al. (2006. MethodsAt 1315 h on 18 September 2021, we collected a subadult Polypedates sp. (Fig. 1) that was not readily identifiable to species on damp ground surrounded by vegetation near the human settlement of Sialhawk, Khawzawl District, Mizoram (23.291645 N, 93.095818 E; elev. 1,300 m asl) (Fig. 2). It was euthanized following methods of Conroy et al. (2009), preserved in 70% ethanol, and catalogued in the Departmental Museum of Zoology, Mizoram University (MZMU2612). Measurements to the nearest 0.1 mm were taken with Mitutoyo dial Vernier Callipers (Model 505-671).We extracted genomic DNA from liver tissue using DNeasy Blood and Tissue Kit (QiagenTM, Valencia, California, USA) following the standard protocol provided by the manufacturer. We amplified and sequenced the partial 16S rRNA gene using a pair of primers: forward L02510-CGCCTGTTTATCAAAAACAT (Palumbi 1996) and reverse H03063-CTCCGGTTTGAACTCAGATC (Rassmann 1997) before performing a PCR reaction for a 20-μL reaction mixture containing 1X amplification buffer, 2.5 mMMgCl 2 , 0.25 mM dNTPs, 0.2 pM each forward and reverse primers, 1 μL genomic DNA, and 1 U Taq DNA polymerase with a pair of partial 16S rRNA primers (above).
