First Report of Saprolegnia parasitica from a Marine Species: Gilthead Seabream (Sparus aurata) in Brackish Water Conditions

Abstract: Saprolegniosis is a serious fungal disease that mostly affects freshwater fish species and eggs. It has a cotton wool-like appearance on the body of amphibians, crustaceans and several fish species. Infected gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) were subjected to clinical, microbiological, parasitological and pathological investigation. On the infected skin samples, grey-white cotton-like patches, erosion of the skin and scale affusion were detected. Lesions covered the whole body of S. aurata in the advanced stag… Show more

“…The scale bar indicates the number of substitutions per site Two of the six phylotypes (represented by one OTU, each) were located within the Saprolegniaceae, with unclear genus affinity. This is noteworthy, as Saprolegnia is considered a terrestrial genus, with infrequent incursions in brackish environments (Höhnk 1968;Dinçtürk et al 2019). While it seems possible that the OTUs represent marine members of the Saprolegniaceae not observed so far, it is also conceivable that, similar to the situation in G. rostratum s.l., the saprolegniaceous species were merely washed to the sea and have a terrestrial origin.…”

“…Para la identificación preliminar de las colonias, se aplicó la tinción con azul de lactofenol, con especial énfasis en las colonias blancas, algodonosas, esponjosas, ligeramente abultadas y blandas (Deutsch et al, 2023;Zaror et al, 2004). La observación se realizo bajo un microscopio con un aumento de 10x y 400x observándose la estructura y la replicación del micelio (Dinçtürk et al, 2019;Koneman & Allen, 2008).…”
