First Records of Condylostylus purpureus (Aldrich, 1901) (Diptera: Dolichopodidae) in the Nearctic Region

Abstract

Condylostylus has been represented in the Nearctic Region by 32 documented species (Bickel 2003, Pollet et al. 2004. Here, I report Condy lostylus purpureus (Aldrich, 1901) for the first time in the Nearctic Region, with a proposed diagnosis for males of the spe cies in the Nearctic and a distribution map of confirmed Nearctic records.An undocumented species of Condy lostylus was first photographed in south ern Florida in the spring of 2010 (https:// bugguide.net/node/view/385054). Per the author's request, in 2022, multiple users of the website iNaturalist.org volunteered to collect physical specimens. Of these, Michael Green collected four males in Palm Beach County, FL, and shipped them to the author. These were identified as C. purpureus using Aldrich (1901), Van Duzee (1915a), and Parent (1929, and were compared with Neotropical specimens of C. purpureus held in the US National Museum (USNM) in Washington, DC (see material examined).
