First record of Anopheles stephensi in Sri Lanka: a potential challenge for prevention of malaria reintroduction

Abstract: BackgroundThe major malaria vector in Sri Lanka is reported to be Anopheles culicifacies with Anopheles subpictus, Anopheles annularis, and Anopheles varuna considered as potential vectors. The occurrence of Anopheles stephensi, which is the key vector of urban malaria in India and the Middle East, had never been reported from Sri Lanka.MethodsA series of entomological investigations were carried out by the Anti Malaria Campaign, Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka during December 2016 to April 2017 in two localitie… Show more

“…After the detection of An. stephensi on Mannar Island [ 9 ], strict adult and preimaginal vector control measures have been implemented by the Antimalaria Campaign (AMC) to eliminate it and curtail its spread to the mainland. The initial identification of An.…”

“…varuna [7][8][9][10][11][12]. Anopheles stephensi (sensu stricto) (type-form), the potent urban vector of malaria in India, was first detected in Sri Lanka in 2017 [13,14]. The expansion of its range to Sri Lanka occurred after its spread to South India as well as Djibouti, Ethiopia and the Sudan in Northeast Africa [15,16].…”

“…Anopheles stephensi, the dominant urban malaria vector in India, was first detected in Mannar island in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka in 2017 ( Fig. 1a) [13][14][15] and subsequently in domestic wells and water storage tanks in Jaffna city in 2018, with a genotype consistent with an origin in Tamil Nadu [15]. Indigenous malaria transmission re-emerging in Jaffna city and the Jaffna Peninsula remains possible because of the proximity to malaria-endemic areas of Tamil Nadu.…”
