First observation of rotation acceleration of magnetic island by using rotating resonant magnetic perturbation on the J-TEXT tokamak

Abstract: Abstract.A set of in-vessel saddle coils called dynamic resonant magnetic perturbation (DRMP) for generating rotating resonant magnetic perturbations has recently been constructed on the J-TEXT tokamak. The phenomenon of tearing mode locking to DRMP and rotating together with the DRMP field has been observed. There is an apparent decrease of the island width during the locking and unlocking procedure. Similar results are obtained in the numerical simulation.

“…3. In this discharge, the 2/1 TM, originally rotating at 3.2 kHz, was accelerated to 6 kHz at 0.26 s due to the application of a 6 kHz RRMP [24,43]. Due to some reasons which remain to be investigated, the TM unlocked from the 6 kHz RRMP at 0.3 s. Then the TM slowed down as indicated by the decrease of f TM (Fig.…”

“…With the presence of a TM at the RS, the TM reacts to the RMP field and hence contributes to additional plasma response. Experimental and theoretical studies demonstrate that the TM could be either locked [4][5][6][24][25][26] or suppressed [4-6, 27, 28] by the RMP field.…”

“…Recent J-TEXT research has contributed to the understanding of the interaction between RMP and tearing mode instabilities. This part summarizes the main findings, including the locking [26][27][28][29][30][31][32][33][34], suppression [26][27][28][29], excitation [35] of the tearing mode and the corresponding thresholds of RMP.…”

“…The mode locking on J-TEXT has been described in several papers from both experimental and theoretical point of views [26][27][28][29][30][31][32][33][34]. We summarize the mode locking phenomenon by displaying two discharges with different phases of the applied RMPs, as shown in In addition, the application of a RMP field rotating at a few kilohertz could lead to the phase locking between rotating RMP and the TM [32]. The TM could either be accelerated [32] or decelerated [33], if the initial slip frequency s TM RMP -f f f  is negative or positive.…”
