First isolation of Mycobacterium avium subsp paratuberculosis from commercial pasteurized milk in Argentina

Abstract: Mycobacterium avium subsp paratuberculosis was isolated from two out of seventy samples (2.86 %) of pasteurized and ultra-pasteurized milk. The isolates were positives to IS900 PCR and showed a C17 RFLP pattern, the most prevalent in Argentina. The present study is the first report of Mycobacterium avium subsp paratuberculosis culture from pasteurized milk in Argentina.

“…Work on the detection and/or quantification of MAP in pasteurised milk from 2001 is summarised in Table 7. Viable MAP has been found in pasteurised milk in the UK (Grant et al 2002a(Grant et al , 2002bGerrard et al 2018), the United States (Ellingson et al 2005), the Czech Republic (Ayele et al 2005) and Argentina (Paolicchi et al 2012) at a frequency ranging from 1.6% to 10.3%. The concentration was low ranging from 1 to 2 cells to 32 per 50 mL.…”

“…There is now significant evidence that commercial HTST pasteurisation does not consistently enable the production of heat‐treated milk free of viable cells of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) (Grant et al b; Ayele et al ; Ellingson et al ; Grant et al ; Paolicchi et al ; Gerrard et al ).…”

“…Crohn"s Disease (CD), a systemic disorder in humans where principal clinico-pathological manifestation is the chronic inflammation of the intestines. Increasing evidences suggest that Crohn's disease has an infectious etiology and MAP being the most plausible candidate since it has been frequently reported from commercial milk and milk products globally (Grant et al, 2002;Ikonomopoulos et al, 2005;Ellingson et al, 2005;Ayele et al, 2005;Paolicchi et al, 2012) and has also been isolated from patients suffering from CD (Singh et al, 2008;Naser et al, 2014).…”
