“…The highest detection rate of CRE was found in curly endive (14.3%) in this study, different from the three previous reports about CRE in vegetables, indicating that ready-to-eat curly endive should attract more attention because this type of vegetable is often consumed as salads (Francis and O'beirne, 2006 ). Besides the carbapenemase-producing K. pneumoniae and E. coli isolates in vegetables reported previously (Touati et al, 2017 ; Wang et al, 2018 ), we found K. pneumoniae with bla KPC−2 , E. coli with bla NDM , and C. freundii with bla NDM , simultaneously in this study, suggesting various genera of bacteria should be monitored in the future.…”

“…The presence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in food is a threat to public health, and particular focus has been given to CRE in the food chain. Although K. variicola producing OXA-181 and K. pneumoniae producing OXA-48 was respectively found in fresh vegetables (Zurfluh et al, 2015b ; Touati et al, 2017 ), both the numbers and locations of the vegetable samples in the two previous reports were relatively few. Recently, only one E. coli co-producing NDM-1 and KPC-2 carbapenemases from lettuce was reported in Guangzhou, China.…”

“…This has led to the description and surveillance of new mechanisms of resistance to antibiotics in 15 various countries reported in 97 scientific publications, including 24 different peer-reviewed journals. The majority of the publications have reported the first detection of antibiotic resistance genes, mainly ESBLs [47] , carbapenemases [15] , [16] , [31] and the mcr-1 plasmid-mediated colistin resistance gene [17] , [18] , [22] in these countries in both humans and animals. One of the main contributions in the field is the description of a strong link between antibiotic consumption in animals and emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance genes in animals as well as the transfer to humans [83] .…”

“…Indeed, in Algeria and Lebanon, we identified chicken, cattle and pigs as possible reservoirs for CTX-M, SHV, TEM, CMY, VIM, OXA-23, OXA-58, aadA, qnrA, qnrB and mcr-1 producing bacteria [16] , [17] , [18] , [19] , [20] , [21] , [22] . Moreover, our work performed in Béjaïa, Algeria, allowed us to isolate from tomato, lettuce and parsley freshly purchased in markets three Klebsiella pneumoniae strains harbouring an OXA-48 carbapenemase [23] .
