“…Hay otros AINEs utilizados con mayor frecuencia en animales de producción que el diclofenaco (Figura 1), ya sea por su bajo precio o por su mayor efectividad frente a determinadas patologías, que pueden ser nefrotóxicos y podrían representar un riesgo importante (Cuthbert et al 2007;Oaks y Meteyer 2012;Oaks et al 2004).En el año 2012 se encontró un cadáver de Gyps fulvus en Andalucía que presentaba gota visceral aguda y unos elevados niveles de flunixin, fármaco con demostrada nefrotoxicidad (Zorrilla et al 2014;Richards et al 2011;Cuthbert et al 2007) al igual que ketoprofeno, carprofeno, fenilbutazona e ibuprofeno (Oaks y Meteyer, 2012;Cuthbert et al 2007). La gran alternativa a estos AINEs es el meloxicam, ya que puede ser un buen antiinflamatorio en animales de producción que no afecta la función renal de los buitres (Cuthbert et al 2007;Swan et al 2006a;Markandya et al 2008;Cuthbert et al 2011).El paracetamol es un inhibidor de la COX que parece que no es nefrolesivo en gallináceas y podría ser una nueva vía de estudio (Jayakumar et al 2016).…”

RESUMENEl diclofenaco es un potente antiinflamatorio utilizado en medicina veterinaria, responsable de la pérdida del 97% de las aves carroñeras del continente Asiático. La reciente autorización de comercialización en España de una especialidad farmacéutica que contiene este fármaco ha creado una preocupación, especialmente relevante, por ser este país la reserva de buitres de Europa. Con esta revisión pretendemos evaluar el riesgo que puede existir analizando el escenario español. El diclofenaco en aves provoca insuficiencia renal aguda por necrosis de las células del túbulo contorneado proximal impidiendo la excreción del ácido úrico, derivando en gota visceral grave y muerte. Los buitres son extremadamente sensibles ya que eliminan más lentamente ciertos fármacos y la dosis terapéutica recomendada en mamíferos es mortal en ellos. En Asia se dieron unas condiciones que favorecieron la grave problemática causada, tales como lascreencias religiosas, la formulación oral en bolo y el reducido coste de esta molécula.Palabras clave: diclofenaco, buitres, gota visceral, AINEs. Pharmaceuticals are highly bioactive compounds now known to be widespread environmental contaminants. However, research regarding exposure and possible effects in non-target higher vertebrate wildlife remains scarce. The fate and behaviour of most pharmaceuticals entering our environment via numerous pathways remain poorly characterized, and hence our conception and understanding of the risks posed to wild animals is equally constrained. The recent decimation of Asian vulture populations owing to a pharmaceutical (diclofenac) offers a notable example, because the exposure route (livestock carcasses) and the acute toxicity observed were completely unexpected. This case not only highlights the need for further research, but also the wider requirement for more considered and comprehensive ‘ecopharmacovigilance’. We discuss known and potential high risk sources and pathways in terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems where pharmaceutical exposure in higher vertebrate wildlife, principally birds and mammals, may occur. We examine whether approaches taken within existing surveillance schemes (that commonly target established classes of persistent or bioaccumulative contaminants) and the risk assessment approaches currently used for pesticides are relevant to pharmaceuticals, and we highlight where new approaches may be required to assess pharmaceutical-related risk.
