AIM:This study was done to study the three dimensional anatomy of internal capsule's white fibers completely by cadaveric dissection and its relation to basal ganglia and other related anatomical structures. MATERIAL and METHODS: Eight formalin fixed cerebral hemispheres were dissected for internal capsule under operating microscope. Klingler's technique of fiber dissection was adopted. The internal capsule was dissected from superiolateral, inferior and medial surface of cerebral hemisphere. During and after dissection its relation with basal ganglia and other related structures were studied. RESULTS:The internal capsule was demonstrated by dissecting fibers of all its parts. Fibers that forms the internal capsule originate from different parts of cerebral cortex and pass through corona radiata that lies in lateral periventricular area and lateral to the caudate nucleus above the upper border of lentiform nucleus. The internal capsule is situated medial to lentiform nucleus and lateral to caudate nucleus and thalamus. Caudally it continues in the midbrain as cerebral peduncle. It has an anterior limb, genu, posterior limb, retrolentiform and sublentiform part. The relation of different parts of internal capsule with surrounding structures were also shown. CONCLUSION: Knowledge of the microsurgical anatomy of the internal capsule and other white fibers tracts is essential for neurosurgeons and other neuroscientists.

The goal of this study was to detail the composition of dorsal fronto-parietal connections in the human brain, focusing on the dorsal component of superior longitudinal fasciculus (SLF), short association fibers, their threedimensional organization, and relationships with adjacent projection and commissural fibers. Ten human cerebral hemispheres (five left and five right) were obtained from necropsy specimens. The technique for specimen preparation was adapted from that previously described by Ludwig and Klingler for spreading groups of white matter fibers, rendering tracts visible and dissectible. Near the superior border of the hemisphere, we observed an overall organization consisting of a succession of ''U'' fibers in both sides of a narrow and irregular intermediary layer of white matter. Dissection of the core fibers leads to the corona radiata (intermingled with the callosal radiations) on the lateral aspect and to the callosal radiations at the medial aspect of the hemisphere. Based on our findings, the fiber dissection technique does not provide evidence of the presence of long horizontal association fibers in such location, as suggested by brain imaging techniques. The results of this study lead us to hypothesize that dorsal regions of the frontal and parietal lobes superior to the level of the cingulate sulcus are connected by a succession of short association pathways. Dissectible long association fibers are only encountered in a zone restricted to a lower and deeper portion of the superior parietal lobule. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in white matter anatomy of the human brain. With advances in brain imaging techniques, the significance of white matter integrity for brain function has been demonstrated in various neurological and psychiatric disorders. As the demand for interpretation of clinical and imaging data on white matter increases, the needs for white matter anatomy education are changing. Because cross-sectional images and formalin-fixed brain specimens are often insufficient in visualizing the complexity of three-dimensional (3D) white matter anatomy, obtaining a comprehensible conception of fiber tract morphology can be difficult. Fiber dissection is a technique that allows isolation of whole fiber pathways, revealing 3D structural and functional relationships of white matter in the human brain. In this study, we describe the use of fiber dissection in combination with plastination to obtain durable and easy to use 3D white matter specimens that do not require special care or conditions. The specimens can be used as a tool in teaching white matter anatomy and structural connectivity. We included four human brains and show a series of white matter specimens of both cerebrum and cerebellum focusing on the cerebellar nuclei and associated white matter tracts, as these are especially difficult to visualize in two-dimensional specimens and demonstrate preservation of detailed human anatomy. Finally, we describe how the integration of white matter specimens with radiological information of new brain imaging techniques such as diffusion tensor imaging tractography can be used in teaching modern neuroanatomy with emphasis on structural connectivity.
