Feynman diagrams as metaphors: borrowing the particle physicist's imagery for science communication purposes

Abstract: We report on an educational project in particle physics based on Feynman diagrams. By dropping the mathematical aspect of the method and keeping just the iconic one, it is possible to convey many different concepts from the world of elementary particles, such as antimatter, conservation laws, particle creation and destruction, real and virtual particles, and so on. We have created a construction toy in which the rules of the graphic representation are translated into mechanical constraints between the toy elem… Show more

“…Various physicists and physics educators have attempted to give educational introductions to FDs. For instance, Pascolini and Pietroni [25] introduced the diagrams as "accurate metaphors" and attempted to introduce the rules underlying Feynman diagrams to learners using a mechanical model. This approach was empirically investigated in a post-test one month after the intervention, where the learners performed satisfactorily.…”

“…In this paper we focus on particle physics and the key concepts of this chapter are: transformation, reaction equation, conservation laws, and symmetry. For recent literature regarding the teaching of symmetries and/or elementary particles, we refer to articles by Hill & Lederman, 1 Pascolini & Pietroni, 2 Kalmus,3 O'Connell, 4 and Hanley. 5 Instead of discussing a multitude of particles and reactions, the core of the elementary particle chapter is formed by a discussion of conservation laws and symmetries.…”
