“…In intact liver parenchyma, SPIOs are trapped by the Kupffer cells, which are part of the reticuloendothelial system that lines the hepatic sinusoids. Because the accumulation of SPIOs causes local magnetic field inhomogeneity, there is considerable T2 and T2* shortening with reduced signal intensity of the liver on T2-and T2*-weighted MR images (3,(10)(11)(12)(13)(14)(15). The degree of signal intensity reduction in focal liver lesions with reduced numbers of Kupffer cells is lower than that in intact liver parenchyma.…”

“…Nanoparticles such as iron oxides and dendrimers are well suited to study of the lymphatics, not only because of the size-selectivity of the lymphatic system, but also because of the enhanced signals that derive from larger particles. For example, superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) nano-particles can increase R 2 * more than >30-fold at 1.5 T and higher under greater magnetic field strength (7), and gadolinium-dendrimer-molecules can increase R 1 more than 10 000-fold compared with small gadolinium-chelates (8,9). Therefore, low concentrations of these particles or molecules can be detected with MRI.…”
