“…We verified that peroxidation of liposomes made of retinal lipids is affected not only by type of initiator but also by aqueous media. This model constitutes a useful system to study formation of lipid peroxidation intermediaries and products in an aqueous environment [63]. …”

“…In our study we found the measurement of congugated dienes to be less precise and that the addition of buffers (HEPES and phosphate) reduced overall peroxidation. This effect of buffers on reducing peroxidation has previous been noted [8,9] and is why we avoided the use of buffers in the current experiments, alternatively allowing the system to settle at a final pH of *4.4 with the added benefit of helping to maintain iron in its ferrous state.…”

“…Thus, we evaluated the capacity of azo dyes and their biodegradation metabolites to induce the oxidation of membrane lipids. In fact, lipid peroxidation can be initiated by the · OH radicals or by perferryl or ferryl derivatives generated in the reactions involving chelated iron, O 2 ·− , and H 2 O 2 (Fagali and Catalá 2009). Curiously, the same compounds inducing the increase of chromosome aberration frequencies were revealed to be able to cause lipid peroxidation.…”
