Introdução: O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar o conhecimento, a atitude e a prática dos universitários da área da saúde que já tiveram relações sexuais, sobre o uso do preservativo como método de prevenção das infecções sexualmente transmissíveis (IST). Metodologia: Estudo descritivo do tipo inquérito sobre Conhecimento, Atitude e Prática, com delineamento transversal e abordagem quantitativa. Foi executada em formato on-line, cujas informações foram obtidas por meio da aplicação de um questionário durante o período de setembro a dezembro de 2021. A análise de dados foi realizada por meio dos softwares JASP 0.9.1.0 e BioEstat 5.0. Resultados: Dos 162 participantes, 64.8% possuíam conhecimento adequado; 52.5%, atitude adequada; e 98.1%, prática inadequada em relação à prevenção. O conhecimento esteve associado com a religião (p=0.015), frequência de realização de testes rápidos (p=0.016) e diagnóstico prévio de IST (p=0.029); a atitude esteve associada com a renda familiar (p=0.027), procedência (p=0.017) e sexo (p=0.000); houve associação da prática com o relacionamento (p=0.040). Discussão: O acesso apropriado a meios de prevenção e de informações favorece melhores atitudes e práticas em relação ao uso dos preservativos. Conclusão: Os universitários podem estar vulneráveis às IST, sendo importante ações educativas voltadas à adesão do preservativo.

Objective: to analyze the social representations about sexually transmitted infections elaborated by undergraduate students. Methods: a descriptive, qualitative study, in the light of the structural approach of Social Representation Theory, carried out with 160 young undergraduate students, in the second half of 2019, in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Data were collected using a sociodemographic characterization questionnaire, knowledge and practices for preventing sexually transmitted infections, analyzed using descriptive statistics and a form of free evocations with the inducing term STD, analyzed using prototypical and similarity analysis. Results: the representation’s possible central nucleus is composed of lexicons aids, disease and HIV; the peripheral system by syphilis, sex, condoms, gonorrhea, prevention, infection, carelessness, HPV, herpes, ignorance, treatment, fear, unprotected-sex and danger. Final considerations: social thinking about sexually transmitted infections is characterized by their recognition as diseases, which require barrier prevention measures, associating with unsafe sexual practices that arouse fear.

Consistent condom use is recognized as one of the most effective strategies to prevent unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections. Despite their effectiveness, condoms remain fairly well used among younger people. The conception of appropriate measures to change behaviors needs a deep understanding of the factors underlying poor adherence to condom use. This study aims to identify the predictors of condom use among college students. A cross-sectional, correlational, and predictive study was conducted involving a convenience sample of 1946 university students, with an average age of 21 years (20.74 ± 2.32). Pender’s Health Promotion Model (HPM) was used as a conceptual and methodological framework to understand the relationship between the predictors of condom use. An explanatory theoretical model of condom use behavior was established using path analysis. Condom use among young people is infrequent, with only 39.4% of respondents reporting consistent use. Perceived benefits, positive feelings, and interpersonal influences emerged as variables with the most explicitly positive influence on the commitment to condom use, a trend confirmed for both sexes. Commitment was the strongest predictor of condom use behavior (β = 0.580; p < 0.001). Pender’s HPM is effective in explaining the relationships between the predictors of condom use.
