Fatigue and Depression in Disease-Free Breast Cancer Survivors: Prevalence, Correlates, and Association with Quality of Life

Abstract: We performed this study to examine the prevalence and correlates of fatigue and depression, and their relevance to health-related quality of life in disease-free breast cancer survivors. A total of 1,933 breast cancer survivors recruited from five large hospitals in Korea completed a mailed survey, which included the Brief Fatigue Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory, European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer QLQ-C30, and QLQ-BR23. “…The point prevalence of depression among this group of breast cancer survivors is much lower than reported in some previous studies [20], but at 9%, it is in line with rates in primary care settings of 5-10% [21] and rates reported in some studies of cancer outpatients [3,22]. There is some evidence that after an initial rise, the prevalence of depression decreases over time following the diagnosis of breast cancer [1].…”

“…Moreover, previous studies have confirmed that breast cancer survivors with increased fatigue rated their quality of life at a lower level [12][13][14]16 . On the other hand, assessing fatigue in cancer survivors is a challenge since fatigue is also a common complaint with some level of fatigue reported by the general population 17,18 .…”
