Fat-free Mass and Excess Post-exercise Oxygen Consumption in the 40 Minutes after Short-duration Exhaustive Exercise in Young Male Japanese Athletes

Abstract: The relationship between fat-free mass (FFM) and excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) has not been well researched because of the relatively small number of subjects studied. This study investigated the effects of FFM on EPOC and EPOC/maximum oxygen consumption. 250 Japanese male athletes between 16 and 21 years old from Nagasaki prefecture had their EPOC measured up to 40 minutes after short-duration exhaustive exercise. The value was named as EPOC 40 min. The proportions of EPOC up to 1, 3, 6, 10, … Show more

“…EPOC was positively related to body composition, fat composition ( % BF and TBF) as well as total muscular content and active muscle mass (FFM and LLFFM). However, even with a larger sample size, this association was less signifi cant in Tahara et al [ 29 ] . According to authors [ 29 ] , the association between FFM and EPOC is due to a larger volume of myoglobin, which plays an important role in the re-synthesis of ATP.…”

“…EPOC could be associated with AOD and its determinants, i.e. exercise intensity and duration (5,25), and individual body dimensions (35). Indeed, Tahara and colleagues (35) showed significant positive correlations between EPOC, body mass (BM) and LBM in 16-to 21-year-old male athletes.…”

Indeed, Tahara and colleagues (35) showed significant positive correlations between EPOC, body mass (BM) and LBM in 16-to 21-year-old male athletes. This result has also been reported by Campos et al ( 9) in 28-year-old professional cyclists for whom EPOC was positively associated with total and lower limb lean mass.…”
