Bisphenol A (BPA) used as an additive in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) products is an endocrine disrupter that causes negative effects on human health. The aim of the present study is to investigate the BPA contents in 26 different plastics bought from China, their major components were identified by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrometry, and the migration of BPA from these materials into four representative solvents and four foods were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Results showed that nine kinds of plastics were identified as PVC, and eight plastic samples were PVC-based films. Recoveries of BPA in films and foods were 88.87%-97.29%, and their precisions expressed as relative standard deviation (RSD) were 1.17%-4.72%. The limit of detection (LOD) was 0.01-0.02 μg ml −1. In the tests of migration into water, 20% ethanol, 4% acetic acid, and n-hexane, migrations from given films, were in all cases greatest into n-hexane (7.44-20 mg kg −1 after 24 h). Migrations from the films with nonzero BPA contents to four foods ranged from 0.079 to 0.403 mg kg −1 , which were higher than the updated European Union specific migration limit for BPA (0.05 mg kg −1). Therefore, PVC should be taken into account in estimating BPA intake or exposure to this substance.

Food contact materials (FCMs) can contain hazardous chemicals that may have the potential to migrate into food and pose a health hazard for humans. Previous studies have mainly focused on plastic materials, while data on packaging materials made from paper and cardboard are limited. We used a panel of cell-based bioassays to investigate the presence and impact of bioactive chemicals on human relevant endpoints like oxidative stress, genotoxicity, inflammation, xenobiotic metabolism and endocrine system effects in extracts made from paper and cardboard. In total, 23 methanol extracts of commonly used paper and cardboard available on the Swedish market were extracted as a whole product using methanol to retrieve polar substances, and tested at concentrations 0.3-10 mg/mL and 0.2-6 mg/mL. At the highest concentration bioactivities were observed in a high proportion of the samples: oxidative stress (52%), genotoxicity (100%), xenobiotic metabolism (74%), antiandrogenic-(52%) and antioestrogenic receptor (39%). Packages of potential concern included cake/pastry boxes/ mats, boxes for infant formula/skimmed milk, pizza boxes, pizza slice trays and bag of cookies. It should be noted that the extraction for packages like cake/pastry boxes can be considered exaggerated, as the exposure usually is shorter. It can be hypothesised that the observed responses may be explained by inks, coatings, contaminants and/or naturally occurring compounds within the material. To summarise, an effect-based approach enables hazard identification of chemicals within FCMs, which is a valuable tool for ensuring safe use of FCMs.

Toxic chemical contaminants released from industrial, agricultural, and municipal sources continues to threaten aquatic ecosystems. Aquatic ecosystems act as the final sinks accumulating and transporting numerous chemicals such as octylphenol (OP), nonylphenol (NP) and bisphenol-A (BPA). These chemicals are undesirable as they have been reported to possess endocrine disrupting properties. This study therefore assessesthe distribution and bioaccumulation of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in Lagos Lagoon. Water and sediment samples were collected at nine different locations on the lagoon. Five different species of fishes were also collected, identified and homogenized prior to sample pre-treatment. Samples were extracted, clean-up, derivatized and analysed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. Physicochemical properties of the samples were also determined. In the water samples, BPA was not detected in all the samples collected at the different locations while the concentrations of NP and OP ranged from ND-102 ng/L and ND-127 ng/L, respectively. The concentrations of the targeted compounds in the sediment samples ranged from ND- 5.08 μg/g BPA, ND-1.90 μg/g NP, and ND- 2.51 μg/g OP while the concentrations ranged from ND-1139 ng/g BPA, ND-476 ng/g NP, and ND-643 ng/g OP in the fish samples. This study revealed the occurrence of EDCs in Lagos lagoon water and their accumulation in biota therein, which can have detrimental effects on other organisms across the food chain.
