Factors Influencing Stope Hanging Wall Stability and Ore Dilution in Narrow-Vein Deposits: Part 1

Abstract: The sublevel open stope method is widely practiced in many Canadian mines when extracting thin tabular orebodies. This method is used as an alternative to sublevel caving when ore dilution (contamination of ore by waste rock) is an issue and where fairly competent rock exists. Dilution and instability at the stope hanging wall (HW) can significantly increase mining operation costs. Dilution reduces the ore grade and increases the amount of material that needs to be extracted and transported to the mill. Stope … Show more

“…Moreover, it analyzes the sequences of mining methods according to the desired backfill. Currently, several research works use numerical modeling as a means of stability analysis in the mining industry context, such as [13]- [17]. Generally, the most used criteria for a geotechnical analysis evaluation are major principal stress, minor principal stress, and safety factor.…”

“…In this step of analysis, we will have analyzed the deformation and the extent of the unstable zone around the excavation to determine the optimum height of the design mine. The deformation will be represented by the total maximum displacement, while the extent of the unstable zone indicates the depth of the unstable zones, which have a safety factor less than 1 (SF < 1), this value is fixed at 1 view that the Mine openings are considered temporary openings [44]. This analysis will be done for different cases of the stress factor ratios K (K = 1, 1.5, 2).…”

“…The safety aspect of ore extraction was established, both with an open space and with the backfilling of the goaf [24][25][26]. The resistance of the rock mass to the clogging of the ore mass [14,27] and the possibility of adjusting the technological parameters of the mining systems were established [28,29].…”
