BackgroundDoctors have an important role in increasing the number of organ donors. This study aimed to investigate the changing attitudes of medical students regarding organ donation, from first-year medical students (FYMS) to sixth-year medical students (SYMS) at a university medical school in Turkey.Material/MethodsOne hundred first-year medical students and 100 sixth-year medical students participated in the study. A four-part questionnaire was designed for the study, with a response rate of 66.8%.ResultsCompleted study questionnaires showed that organ donation was considered by 46% of first-year medical students and 60% of sixth-year medical students, but an organ donor card was signed by only 8% and 10%, respectively. Information about organ donation had been sought, mainly from social media, by 72% of first-year medical students, and 55% of sixth-year medical students. Regarding their views on organ donation of their relatives, 78% of first-year medical students and 86% of sixth-year medical students were influenced by the opinions of their families and community. When asked about brain death, 50% of first-year medical students and 12% of sixth-year medical students believed it to be a potentially reversible condition, or were uncertain of the definition.ConclusionsDuring six years of training in a university medical school in Turkey, there was only a slight increase in the number of students who were willing to become organ donors and there was a lack of formal education regarding organ donation. Therefore, urgent improvements are required in the education of doctors and society regarding organ donation.

Objectives: To evaluate the knowledge of corneal donation and the new opt-out system among junior doctors in the East Midlands, UK. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study performed during June-September 2020. A 26-item questionnaire-based survey was disseminated to all 340 junior doctors working in the East Midlands, UK. Relevant data, including participants background, knowledge of corneal donation and the new opt-out system introduced in England, were analysed. Results: A total of 143 responses were received (response rate=42.1%). Nineteen (13.3%) junior doctors had previously discussed about corneal donation. The majority (100, 69.9%) of them perceived the importance of obtaining consent for corneal donation as junior doctors, but only 24 (16.8%) felt comfortable in discussing corneal donation. The knowledge of corneal donation was low, with a mean correct response rate of 33.3+/-20.8%. Only 28 (19.6%) doctors were aware of the 24-hour death-to-enucleation time limit. The majority (116, 81.1%) of doctors would consider certifying a death on the ward quicker if they knew it could potentially compromise the quality of corneas. Most (103, 72%) doctors were aware of the new opt-out system but only 56 (39.2%) doctors correctly stated that donation can only proceed with family consent. Conclusion: Junior doctors working at the frontline services serve as valuable members in contributing to the process of obtaining consent for organ/tissue donation. Our study highlights the lack of knowledge of corneal donation and the opt-out system amongst junior doctors in the UK. Targeted postgraduate training during the induction process may potentially enhance the donation rate.

Introdução: O processo de doação de órgãos e tecidos é definido por ações a fim de transformar um Potencial Doador (PD) em doador efetivo e inicia-se com o diagnóstico de morte encefálica. Objetivo: analisar o perfil clínico e sociodemográfico dos potenciais doadores de órgãos, como também os fatores que influenciam na doação de órgãos. Métodos: Trata-se de uma pesquisa quantitativa, transversal, retrospectiva e analítica realizada através da coleta de dados de 455 prontuários de pacientes com diagnóstico de Morte Encefálica, de uma Região do Nordeste brasileiro, utilizando formulário estruturado. Posteriormente realizaram-se análises descritivas e nas associações entre as variáveis independentes e dependente, utilizou-se o teste qui-quadrado de Pearson Resultados: As faixas etárias de maior incidência foram entre 21 a 40 anos e 41 a 60 anos, com 33,8% cada, prevalecendo o sexo masculino (64,1%). Em relação à causa da morte, predominou o Trauma Cranioencefálico com 36,5%. Foram entrevistados 83,3% dos familiares e desses, 53,5% autorizaram a doação. Quanto à relação das respostas das entrevistas com os familiares e o sexo dos PD o sexo masculino se destacou com 59,01% das entrevistas positivas, quanto a entrevista e faixa etária, não foram encontradas diferenças significativas. Correlacionando o resultado das entrevistas familiares e a causa da morte, 40,63% destas tinham como causa o trauma cranioencefálico, e desse total, 63,63% tiveram a doação autorizada. Conclusão: A maioria dos doadores efetivos foram jovens e do sexo masculino, com prevalência do trauma craneoencefálico como causa da morte encefálica e da aceitação familiar para a doação.

Abstract: Older age of BDCPs and a prolonged ICU LOS resulted in FR. ICU team specific education emerged as the only modifiable protective factor for oppositions, thus continuous and in-depth training programs for physicians and nurses could be of importance in preventing FR.
