Factors Associated with the Caregivers’ Desire to Institutionalize Persons with Dementia: A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract: Background/Aims: Dementia is one of the main reasons for institutionalization among the elderly. Few studies have explored factors associated with the caregivers’ (CG) desire to institutionalize (DTI) a person with dementia (PWD). The objective of this study is to identify modifiable and non-modifiable psychosocial and sociodemographic factors associated with a caregiver’s DTI. Methods: Cross-sectional data of 355 informal CG of community-dwelling PWD were analyzed. Several characteristics were identified in C… Show more

“…Research has proven also that lower DIS is associated with lower burden, and with being able to better cope with the behavioral problems of the dementia patient. 39 However, our trial did not reveal a significantly reduced caregiver burden nor improved coping with behavioral problems.…”

“…In the second phase of the analysis, we ran a multiple logistic regression model, as the decision about care choice arrangement is often a combination of many factors [3,22]. We suspected that some of the demographic variables were likely to be highly correlated (for example, family structure and number of dependents), and the correlation would result in confounding effects in the multiple logistic regression results.…”

“…Extant research regarding the choice of care arrangements mostly focuses on the characteristics associated with the decision to institutionalise the elderly [14,21], with a segment of related research focussing on the decision to institutionalise PWD [3,22]. Related research mainly focuses on the dynamics that paid home caregivers introduce in familial caregiving settings [4,[23][24][25][26].…”

“…Formal care may not currently represent socially acceptable and expressive attitudes for Muslims in South Africa. However, given the burden on families as dementia progresses, and the high costs associated with informal care for PWD [2,4,8,13,14], the government needs to put more resources into increasing facilities to cater to the needs of PWD and deliver effective culturally congruent care. Family support typically continues in formal-care settings, with the burden on the family said to decrease compared to when caregiving takes place at home [15,43].…”

“…of caregiving responsibilities, and/or not deriving any benefits from providing care [2,4,8,13,14,17]. For Muslims, value incongruence, due to the adaptation that has being brought about by economic development and globalisation may have developed across the different family structures, and also as a result of experiencing the challenges associated with caring for PWD.…”
