Factors associated with HIV and syphilis infection among female sex workers in three cities in Papua New Guinea: findings from Kauntim mi tu, a biobehavioral survey

Abstract: Background In this paper, factors associated with HIV and syphilis infection in three cities in Papua New Guinea are explored. Methods: Respondent-driven sampling surveys among FSW in Port Moresby, Lae, and Mt. Hagen (2016–17) were conducted. FSW who were aged ≥12 years, who were born female, who spoke English or Tok Pisin and who had sold or exchanged vaginal sex in the past 6 months were eligible to participate. Participants were interviewed face-to-face and offered rapid HIV and syphilis testing. Survey log… Show more

“…HIV prevalence among MSM and TGW was 8.5% in Port Moresby and 6.9% in Lae [ 18 ]. These rates are significantly higher than the estimated adult prevalence of 0.9% [ 17 ]. For a detailed description of the methodology used, including reasons for combining MSM and TGW into a single survey, see the Kauntim mi tu study report [ 17 ].…”

“…In Papua New Guinea (PNG), sex work and male-to-male sex are illegal and highly stigmatised [ 16 ]. In this setting key populations including FSW, MSM and TGW are particularly vulnerable to HIV due to high prevalence of HIV-related risk behaviours, including concurrent sexual partnerships, low condom use and high prevalence of sexually transmissible infections [ 17 , 18 ]. Kauntim mi tu , a biobehavioural survey (BBS) among FSW, MSM and TGW in PNG undertaken in 2016–17 across three cities reported an HIV prevalence of 15.2% among FSW in Port Moresby, 11.9% in Lae, and 19.6% in Mount Hagen [ 19 ].…”

“…Prevalence data shown after adjustment for diagnostic test performance and endemic yaws (see Methods). In (c), the two data points for FSW in 2017 are from two sentinel cities (Lae, with higher prevalence, and Mount Hagen) ( Kelly-Hanku et al., 2020 ). PoM = Port Moresby, the capital.…”
