Factors Affecting the Choice, Intensity, and Allocation of Irrigation Technologies by U.S. Cotton Farmers

Abstract: Abstract:We use the 2013 cotton precision farming survey data to study the adoption of irrigation technologies by cotton farmers in 14 states of the United States. We find that farmers with a higher irrigated yield, and who are from the Southern Plains (Texas and Oklahoma), adopt water-efficient irrigation technologies, such as sub-surface drip and trickle irrigation technologies. There are 10 irrigation technologies that farmers can adopt for cotton production in these 14 cotton-growing states. The intensity … Show more

“…AI offers formal general algorithms for prediction [56,57], accuracy and performance evaluation [58] as well as pattern classification [59][60][61] that might solve knowledge issues in the agricultural domain such as the pest's identifications and the correct treating methods. In addition, AI supports applications in farming technics development: land allocation regarding the targeted activity [62], irrigation process analysis and control [63,64], robot guidance [65][66][67], etc.…”

“…A positive relationship between land and irrigation participation shows that in the study area most of farmers having small land size participate in cultivating perennial cash crop and not participate in irrigation activities as their land is already occupied with cash crops. There are several studies that shows the positive association between land size and irrigation participation [65,66] and [67]). Furthermore, a positive relationship between irrigation use and non/ off-farm income is that irrigation by its nature needs a finance to purchase farm equipment and hire labor.…”

“…VRI technology will result in varying degrees of beneficial and non-beneficial outcomes for each field (Pokhrel et al, 2018) because the type and amount of variability is different in each field, and the return on investment depends on a number of factors including crop type, useful life of the equipment, cost of water, and the cost to pump the water (Marek et al, 2001;Almas et al, 2003). Since some fields benefit from VRI and some fields do not, more studies are needed at the landscape level to quantify the proportion that will be amenable to this technology.…”
