Unfortunately, some nursing personnel neglect to provide such counseling (Blanchard, 1982;Kommers et al, 1977;Kommers and Sullivan, 1979;Pitkin, 1953;Salmon, 1979). It is easy to imagine the panic of one patient described by Sykes (1966) who thought he was dead when he awoke because he was unable to feel air pass through his nose or mouth and did not realize he was breathing through his tracheostoma.…”

“…According to several investigators (McDonald, 1970(McDonald, , 1971Pitkin, 1953;Reed, 1961;Sykes, 1966;Thee, 1969), mucus and coughing are a chief cause of discomfort. It is difficult to adjust to breathing and coughing through a laryngectomy tube, even under ideal conditions.…”

“…Another wife complained that her husband wanted to watch television all day and became annoyed whenever she walked in front of him or made noise with the vacuum cleaner, sewing machine, or dishwasher. Most couples adjust within the first year (Pitkin, 1953). The men begin to busy themselves with projects around the house, assume more responsibility for household chores, spend a good deal of time practicing their speech, and develop new interests or hobbies.…”
