Factors affecting commercial success of biocontrol agents of phytonematodes.

Abstract: This chapter analyses the shortcomings and hindrances coming in the way of commercialization of nematode biological control agents (BCAs). The key factors that determine the success and failure of BCAs (particularly bacteria and fungi) of phytonematodes during their commercialization are explained. These factors can be roughly divided into ecological (abiotic and biotic), intrinsic, technological, societal, regulatory and commercial factors.

“…Mass production of the microbe responsible for improving crop yield is one of the prime requirements for commercialization ( Moosavi and Zare, 2015 ). Pasteuria is a good case study of a product that in the past was not very practical from an industrial perspective due to difficulties with mass production.…”

“…This means that T. longibrachiatum isolate MIAU 143 C did not have the potential for stimulation of plant defense against this nematode population. Profound variations among different isolates or species of fungi in suppressing phytonematodes could be the consequence of differences in fungal aggressiveness and ecological (biotic and abiotic) factors (Moosavi and Zare, 2015).…”

“…The current management method for M. javanica is the use of chemical nematicides, which can have adverse effects on the environment and human life (Moosavi and Zare, 2015). Cadusafos (Rugby 10 G; FMC Corporation, Philadelphia, PA) is one of the most effective nematicides against root-knot nematodes in Iran that is widely used at the dose of 50 to 60 kg/ha in zucchini farms.…”

“…The remarkable operators for more commercial demands of a BCA are due to intrinsic, environmental, technological, societal, economic, and commercial items (Moosavi and Zare 2015;Labaude and Griffin 2018;Dutta et al 2019). For instance, economic factors comprise the grower's sense to manage the PPN pests, the cost of biocontrol agent relative to other management options, the price of the commodity (e.g.…”
