Face‐bow transfer in prosthodontics: a systematic review of the literature

Abstract: An extensive search for randomised controlled clinical trials was accomplished to compare dental prostheses and occlusal splints constructed with or without face-bow transfer, and question whether face-bow transfer may present better clinical results than simpler approaches. Studies were identified by searching electronic databases (PubMed/MEDLINE, Latin American and Caribbean Literature on the Health Science, and Brazilian Bibliography of Dentistry). The keywords 'dental articulator', 'semi-adjustable articul… Show more

“…Door anderen wordt echter de toegevoegde waarde hiervan in twijfel getrokken (Ellis et al, 1992;Walker et al, 2008 betere occlusale contacten (Shodadai et al, 2001). Het klinisch nut van een positieregistratie bij de vervaardiging van prothetische constructies is niet aangetoond (Carlsson 2009;Koyano et al, 2012;Farias-Neto et al, 2013). “…Usually, a traumatic occlusal interference will occur due to a single tooth, which presents premature contact during maximum intercuspidation or in excursive jaw movements, resulting in disorders of orofacial structures . Thus, an adequate occlusal recording is essential to determine the integration of indirect restorations into the patient's masticatory system …”

“…3 Thus, an adequate occlusal recording is essential to determine the integration of indirect restorations into the patient's masticatory system. 4 Despite the fitting accuracy of CAD-CAM crowns, 5 an ideal occlusal surface is difficult to design, since it demands determining the dynamic relation between dental arches. The first CAD-CAM software systems provided an occlusal morphology based only on standardized morphology.…”

“…Such complications are inevitable if the occlusal morphology of the prosthesis has not been developed on the articulator that "does not behave" like a patient meaning that "does not receive Facebow transfer." The complete denture occlusion may not be so critical, rightly pointed out by few authors, 3 as the acrylic teeth can be trimmed easily to refine occlusion without the risk of metal exposure or crown perforation and additionally mucosal resiliency allows denture/s to get adjusted easily by the patient. Hence, there is a need of further studies to support the relevance of the facebow especially in a fixed prosthodontic practice including implant restorations.…”
