Fabrication and Characterization of Iron Oxide Filled Polyvinyl Pyrrolidone Nanocomposites

Abstract: The present work describes the synthesis and properties of nanomagnetic polymer composites (MPCs) comprising iron oxide nanoparticles as a filler and polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) as polymer shell. The iron oxide nanoparticles were synthesized under alkaline medium using iron (II) salt. The nanocomposites were synthesized through free radical polymerization under microwave (MW) irradiation. X-ray diffraction reveals the uniform dispersion of iron oxide nanoparticles into polymer matrix. Furthermore, scanning ele… Show more

“…The spectrum of raw PVP was very similar to that reported in the literature (Fig. S2(d)) [48,49]. As would be expected in a polymeric structure, a remarkable carbonyl stretch (m C@O) of the pyrrolidone ring was observed at 1663 cm À1 , in addition to the CH 2 symmetric (ms C-H) and CH 2 asymmetric stretch (mas C-H) in the chain and ring at 2922 and 2957 cm À1 , CH 2 scissor and C-H bend at around 1370-1495 cm À1 , C-N stretch and CH 2 wagging at around 1290 cm À1 , and NAC@O bend at 573 and 650 cm À1 .…”

“…In the spectra of the magnetic particles ( Fig. S2(a-c)), the stretching vibration of Fe-O was detected in the low frequency region (about 580 cm À1 ) [49,50]. The vibration peak at 1573 cm À1 (Fig.…”

“…The bands at 3400-3600 cm -1 assigned to the vibration of OH group linked on the surface of iron oxide, hence iron oxide is hydrophilic in nature, and highly compatible to the organic components. This is information is indicating that the interaction is being established between the polymer and the particles of the Iron oxide [10][11][12][13][14].…”

“…This study has most significant contribution in the advancement of various synthetic strategies adopted for the preparation of magnetic nanoprecursors or materials (Agarwal et al 2012;Angheluta et al 2012;Dave and Kalaniya 2012;Fannin et al 2012;Shahrahi et al 2012;Torre et al 2012;Wen et al 2012). The method proposed in the study for the preparation of nanomagnetic ferrofluids is efficient and productive.…”
