External Radiation Dosimetry

Abstract

Radiation dosimetry encompasses the theory and application of principles and techniques associated with the measurement of ionizing radiation. While there is concern regarding exposure to radiation both externally and internally, this article refers only to exposure to radiation that is external to the body. Particular focus is put on methods of radiation detection and the application of these radiation detectors to the assessment of the energy deposited (i.e., the absorbed dose) in the human body. The article includes an introductory section to define terms and explain concepts as well as brief discussions of the dosimeters used in radiation protection.
