Expression of β‑catenin and MMP‑8 in gingival crevicular fluid and gingival tissue indicates the disease severity of patients with chronic periodontitis

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to investigate the interaction among β-catenin, matrix metalloproteinase-8 (MMP-8) and severity in patients with chronic periodontitis. Both gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and gingival tissue was collected from 21 healthy control individuals, 21 patients with moderate chronic periodontitis (mCP) and 23 patients with severe chronic periodontitis (sCP). The concentration of MMP-8 in GCF was detected via ELISA and the mRNA levels of β-catenin and MMP-8 in GCF and gingival tissue … Show more

“…Five studies were conducted in China, 46,52,54,59,60 3 in the USA, 50,51,55 2 in India, 48,58 2 in Turkey, 45,47 and the others were from Brazil, 57 Chile, 49 Thailand, 56 and Iran 53 . The majority of the studies were case–control studies ( n = 12), 45,50–60 while randomized clinical trials and non‐randomized clinical interventional studies were also included. The total number of periodontitis patients in the test groups ranged from 11 to 44 (periodontitis group), whereas the control group included 5 to 29 periodontally healthy individuals (healthy group).…”

“…All the included studies were published between 2012 and 2021. “…Another reason of difference can be the type of sample used as present study detected the MMP-8 levels in unstimulated saliva through ELISA while other studies have done their investigations on gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) or gingival tissues and analyzed MMP-8 levels through western blotting or co-immunoprecipitation techniques. 8,11,12 Gingival crevicular fluid exhibits various biomarkers that are also present in saliva, however, unlike salivary collection, the collection of gingival crevicular fluid is more difficult hence poses a constraint leading to its limited use in disease diagnostics. 13 It is pertinent to note that while protective effects of TQ have been documented regarding its interaction with molecular targets in inflammation, including pro-inflammatory cytokines and enzymes, precise mechanism responsible for antiinflammatory role of TQ or Nigella sativa still remain less-understood.…”

“…Although antibiotic therapies are effective in reducing periodontal destruction, it is still extremely difficult to cure chronic periodontitis given the complex pathogenesis and bacterial resistance [26]. In addition, only few periodontitis patients undergo surgical intervention.…”
