“…Kawana et al showed different levels of CD1d expression in epithelial cells in the lower reproductive tract, ranging from high expression in the vagina, ectocervix and penile urethra and very low expression in endocervix and endometrium [31]. We found different results: low CD1d expression (ranging from 4% to 8%) in material obtained from patients with genital prolapse.…”

“…In addition to the study (7) reported in the letter by Hu et al, showing reduced CD1d expression in cells expressing the HPV-E5 protein, the same group in an earlier study showed that weak CD1d expression in uninfected lower reproductive tract tissues (vagina, endocervix) could be induced to higher levels by exposure to IFN-g (8). Although we were unable to detect altered levels of CD1d expression in hyperproliferative keratinocytes of K14E7 transgenic mouse skin (unpublished data), we speculate that HPV proteins involved in the early course of infection, such as E5 protein, may initially cause downregulation of CD1d and potentially other MHC molecules in infected epithelial cells as a mechanism of viral immune escape.…”

“…We here extended the potential of vaginal immunization for induction of protective immunity in the female genital tract to a non TLR-targeting immunostimulator, namely ␣-GalCer. It is noteworthy that a recent report has shown that CD1d is expressed on the epithelial cells in the human vagina (30). However, additional studies are required to evaluate the applicability of vaginal immunization to humans, and to understand the molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in generation of immunity in the female genital tract.…”
