Abstract: Malignant neoplasms may be composed of several cell groups, including cancer stem cells (CSC). These cells have been related with the capacity of metastasis, relapse and resistance to multiple drugs during chemotherapy. This study aims to identify CSC biomarkers and their expression pattern in human head and neck carcinomas. This study was conducted following the PRISMA checklist. The search for articles was carried out in five databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Lilacs and Scielo). The articles found w… Show more

“…The hyperactivation of IL6/STAT3 pathway was reported to be essential for CSC self-renewal and tumorigenic [31,32]. While other biomarkers, such as CD44 and Nestin, were correlated with tumor staging, tumor size and lymph node metastasis [33,34]. The correlations between risk signature and cancer cell stemness and drug resistance have been confirmed by IHC assay.…”

“…d Patient died during therapy to conventional therapy resistance and are responsible for tumor progression and recurrence [13]. BMI-1, ALDH1, and CD44 are amongst the most common and most studied CSC markers in HNSCC [14]. BMI-1 (B-lymphoma Moloney murine leukemia virus insertion region-1) acts in the self-renewal ability of stem cells.…”

“…We found that both PPP and BMS-754807 markedly blunted the clonogenic potential of several independent MEC cell lines relative to vehicle-treated cells (Figures 3B and S4C). Several recent studies have documented the existence of cancer stem cell (CSC) subpopulations within various head and neck cancers including salivary MEC and these CSCs are associated with malignant potential (Adams et al, 2015;Curtarelli et al, 2018;Keysar et al, 2017). Since tumor spheroids are uniquely enriched for CSCs, we also quantified the efficacy of PPP on 3D tumor spheroid formation in Matrigel and find that sustained IGF-1Ri treatment (7 days) significantly blocks MEC 3D sphere formation (Figures 3C and 3D).…”
