Exposure to Methoxyflurane: Low-Dose Analgesia and Occupational Exposure

Abstract: IntroductionEvidence of nephrotoxicity led to abandonment of methoxyflurane anaesthesia. In lower doses via the Penthrox® inhaler, methoxyflurane is used for analgesia. We aim to review the literature to identify the relevance of methoxyflurane as an effective analgesic agent, identify whether there are any patient safety concerns in modern use, and determine occupational risk to healthcare personnel due to environmental methoxyflurane exposure.MethodsArticles were located via PubMed, ScienceDirect, Go… Show more

“…However, its use requires careful titration and monitoring to minimize the risk of adverse effects. The most reported adverse effects include respiratory depression, hypotension, pain at the injection site, nausea and vomiting, headache, allergic reactions, confounding by indication, and propofol-related infusion syndrome (PRIS), which in rare cases at high doses can trigger metabolic acidosis, rhabdomyolysis, heart failure, and other life-threatening symptoms [20,21].…”

“…The subjects’ stress response can bring about poor wound healing and immune function depression, owing to which the necessity of the patient’s pain management is quite evident. [ 3 ] Several anesthetics drugs used in the procedure can with certainty be contributed to minimize anxiety and pain and may have side effects for the patient with kidney problems. The drugs when combined with a balanced dose help enhance the therapeutic effects and reduce their overall side effects.…”
