Exploring the Relationship Between Deficits in Social Cognition and Neurodegenerative Dementia: A Systematic Review

Abstract: BackgroundNeurodegenerative diseases might affect social cognition in various ways depending on their components (theory of mind, emotional processing, attribution bias, and social perception) and the subtype of dementia they cause. This review aims to explore this difference in cognitive function among individuals with different aetiologies of dementia.MethodsThe following databases were explored: MEDLINE via PubMed, Cochrane Library, Lilacs, Web of Science, and PsycINFO. We selected studies examining social … Show more

“…NCDs are a very heterogeneous group of neurological conditions. Social cognition and behavior changes have been proved to be core symptoms in a relevant number of patients affected by different cognitive disorders [ 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 71 , 72 ]. Interest in the treatment of social cognition alterations has thus significantly increased in the last decades.…”

“…According to the percentage of points obtained, the study quality was then rated as good (> 75%), fair (50-75%), or poor (<50%). These criteria were chosen following the literature (e.g., Grimm et al, 2021;Setién-Suero et al, 2022). Only studies rated as fair or good were included in the IPD meta-analysis.…”

“…These brain changes result in reduced inhibition, increased socially inappropriate behaviors, and greater caregiver burden [35]. However, the unique impacts of age-related neurodegenerative disease on specific components of social cognitive function are not well understood (but see [44]). Affective ToM/cognitive empathy (i.e., understanding others' mental states) and emotion identification are impaired in ADRD [35] and PD [45].…”
