Multifunctionality of urban agriculture is essential for the sustainability of both cities and urban farms, especially in Asian mega-cities exhibiting extensive urban sprawl. To maximise the multifunctionality of these farms, entrepreneurial or innovative farm diversification is important. However, there is insufficient research on this issue in developed countries. This study aims to demonstrate the existence of advanced diversified farms characterised by entrepreneurship, skilled farm management and social networks and explore their economic and social sustainability by using data from a survey of 386 farms located close to urban areas in Japan. Gaussian mixture clustering analysis revealed that only about 10% of the sample can be classified as advanced diversified farms and most of the other diversified farms do not exhibit entrepreneurial attributes. Furthermore, regression analysis revealed that advanced diversification has a positive impact not only on the economic viability of farms, but also on their social performance. These findings have significant implications for policies promoting the sustainability of urban agriculture, suggesting that a more balanced promotion of the diversification and entrepreneurial attributes of farms is crucial to building a sustainable relationship between cities and urban agriculture.

Личные подсобные хозяйства (ЛПХ) являются важным элементом многоукладной системы сельского хозяйства РФ и обеспечивают продуктами питания значительную часть населения страны. Изучение адаптационных возможностей ЛПХ, степени их устойчивости к изменяющимся социально-экономическим условиям представляется актуальной научно-практической задачей в свете решения проблемы продовольственной безопасности страны. Цель данного исследования заключается в оценке устойчивости функционирования ЛПХ на примере действующих хозяйств сельских поселений Томской области за период 1990-2018 гг. В работе представлены авторские методологические подходы к оценке устойчивости ЛПХ с позиции энергетического анализа, основанного на учете внешних и внутренних затрат энергии на производство сельскохозяйственной продукции. В качестве критерия устойчивости предлагается показатель, наиболее чутко и динамично реагирующий на изменение социально-экономических условий -доля продуктов питания собственного производства от общего объема потребления продуктов питания. Апробация предлагаемых подходов на примере действующих ЛПХ позволила выделить три основных периода, в течение которых структура хозяйств претерпевала существенную перестройку. Выявлено, что изменение значения критерия устойчивости зависит главным образом от экономических условий жизни населения, социальной значимости сельскохозяйственной деятельности и местоположения хозяйств. В результате анализа статистических данных рассчитаны средние значения критерия устойчивости, которые могут быть использованы для выявления негативных тенденций, как в функционировании отдельных хозяйств, так и в развитии сельских поселений в целом. Подчеркивается, что поддержание устойчивости ЛПХ возможно только при активном содействии со стороны государства, направленного на диверсификацию производства и сохранение сельского уклада жизни.Ключевые слова: личные подсобные хозяйства, устойчивость, социально-экономические условия, анализ энергетических затрат

Entrepreneurship in agriculture is a phenomenon that is growing in importance with the changing framework conditions for agricultural production and has led to heterogeneity in farm business development paths. To understand this phenomenon better, a classification scheme for strategic entrepreneurial choices in agriculture is developed for family farmers. The choices that are scrutinized are reduction, continuation, expansion, diversification, and the dual strategy of expansion and diversification. Each farmer is uniquely assigned to one of these choice classes according to their implemented entrepreneurial activities. Determinants influencing these choices are investigated with a multinomial logit model. The data are derived from a quantitative survey among German farmers (N = 745). Strong effects are observable within the area of personal factors; creativity and risk affinity benefit entrepreneurial strategies connected with diversification. Farmers with a third‐level education qualification are less likely to follow expansion strategies, and those with off‐farm employment and risk‐averse farmers mainly choose a reduction strategy. Family involvement, especially the farmer's spouse, proves to have stabilizing and even enhancing effects on certain strategies. Implications for policymakers and actors within the agricultural sector can thus be derived.
