The study assessed constraints faced by agriculture researchers in conducting research uptake activities in tertiary institutions in Rivers State, Nigeria. Simple random sampling was used to select one hundred and eighty-two agriculture researchers from the three universities that have faculty of Agriculture in Rivers State. Data for the study was collected using a questionnaire and in-depth interviews while analysis of data was carried out using, mean, percentages and the Binary Logit regression model. Results showed that 98% of the researchers were involved in research uptake activities. Publication of journal articles (76%), convening training workshops (60%) and organizing seminars (59%) were the major research uptake activities conducted by agriculture researchers in the State. Insufficient funds (x=3.68), lack of basic facilities (x=3.54) and poor synergy between researchers and policymakers (x =3.48) were major constraints faced by agriculture researchers in conducting research uptake activities. Agriculture researchers’ socioeconomic characteristics were not significant determinants of agriculture researchers’ level of involvement in research uptake activities in the study area. The provision of basic structural facilities and financial support by university management will aid agricultural researchers’ involvement in research uptake activities.

Factors Influencing Farmers’ Adoption of Improved Technologies in Maize Production in Kuje Area Council of Fct-Abuja, Nigeria

The purpose of this investigation was to examine the factors influencing farmers’ adoption of improved technology for maize production in Kuje Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, Nigeria. Respondents were selected using multiple stage sampling approaches, and a well-structured questionnaire was employed to gather the primary data. Descriptive statistics and multiple linear regression analysis were used to actualize the objectives of the study. The demographics of the respondents showed that 81.8% of the rice farmers were men while 77.3% of them were married. The average household size of the respondents was 7.41 while the average age of respondents was 43.81 years, and this implies that a larger category of the respondents are still within the productive active age and can effectively engage in farming activities. Meanwhile, the average year of farming experience of the respondents was 11.77 years. Also, most (52%) of them had at least a primary school education, their average farm size was 1.54 hectares while the average income of the farmers was N55545.91. The findings showed that fellow farmers and friends and family members were the primary sources of knowledge about maize producing technology. The production technology with the highest level of adoption is early harvesting of matured crops. The regression analysis elucidated that educational level, membership of cooperatives and farm size significantly influenced the level of adoption of improved production technologies. It was recommended that creative ways should be developed by extension agents to make vital information available to farmers.

Gender issues in access to land among farmers in Karu L.G.A of Nassarawa State, Nigeria was investigated. Random sampling procedures were used. Primary data were obtained through structured questionnaires administered to 100 respondents. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, logit regression model. Findings showed that some socio-economic characteristics have significant effect on the access to land, these includes; sex, occupation, farm size, annual income and level of education. gender has a positive significant effect with a coefficient of 0.03064 at 5% significant level of probability. Annual income and educational level of the respondents had a significant effect on the access to land with coefficient of 0.0468 and 0.1426 at 1% level of probability. The majority of the respondents (92.00%) indicated that price of land was the major actor limiting access to farm land in the study area. Other factors indicated were; Local customs (78.00%), farming experience (69.00%), communal land tenure system (63.00%), lack of resource to cultivate farm lands (59.00%), and access to credit (52.00%). 79.00% of the respondent disagreed that men and women have equal right to land ownership it was also indicated by majority (81.00%) of the respondents that men have more access to farm land than women. It was recommended that the women farmers should be encouraged to access credit facilities from government agencies. This will help them to increase production, through acquiring sizeable acreage of land. Also, Local customs that’s are not favourable to the women in accessing land for farming operations should be abolished so as to have equal right with their male counterparts
