“…The importance of personal norms in times of pandemic can also be attributed to people’s social need for belonging, which can be met by acting responsibly and with consideration for others (He and Harris, 2020). These results are consistent with prior research (Song et al , 2023) that has emphasised the significance of personal norms in similar contexts. Overall, the results indicate that awareness of consequences, ascribed responsibility and personal norms are all crucial factors for discouraging stockpiling during public crises.…”

“…The first is the mediator interpretation that proposes a sequential cause mechanism, which suggests that awareness of consequences affects ascribed responsibility, which in turn affects personal norms (De Groot and Steg, 2009;Steg and De Groot, 2010). Some studies also follow a simpler model in which awareness of consequences and ascribed responsibility are direct antecedents of personal norms, which then mediate their effect on behaviour or behavioural intentions (Song et al, 2023;Klo ¨ckner, 2013;Wang et al, 2019). The second is the moderator interpretation in which awareness of consequences and ascribed responsibility moderate the link between personal norms and behaviour (De Groot and Steg, 2009).…”

“…Schwartz (1973) proposed the NAM, which serves as a model for understanding why individuals engage in altruistic behaviors. Unlike the TPBa reasoned-choice model (Ding et al, 2023) the NAM operates by transferring moral norms into pro-social and/or proenvironmental behaviors, and it is thus frequently employed to explore behaviors that are beneficial to society and the environment, such as waste recycling (Ding et al, 2023), reusable express packaging (Song et al, 2023) and public and green transport use (Ashraf Javid et al, 2021;Mehdizadeh et al, 2019). The NAM is commonly seen as a linear model that proposes three influential dimensions that lead to altruistic behavior: Personal norms (PN), which refers to an individual' ethical and moral obligation to engage in a certain behavior; the ascription of responsibility (AOR), which pertains to an individual's sense of accountability for the negative our comes that result from non-pro-social behaviors; and awareness of consequences (AOC), which refers to an individual's understanding the harmful outcomes that result from failing to behave in a pro-social and/or pro-environmental manner (Schwartz, 1973).…”

“…Furthermore, the environmental concern can increase PMN by influencing individuals to see environmental protection and sustainability as personal responsibilities resonating with their values and beliefs (Steg et al, 2011). Studies (Koklic et al, 2019;Song et al, 2023) have reported a positive relationship between environmental concern and PMN. Accordingly, consumers are increasingly acting responsibly by showing interest in products or services that cause lower pollution, minimise natural resource exploitation and lessen environmental harm (Acheampong & Siiba, 2020;Dangelico et al, 2021;Hazen et al, 2017).…”
