Background Given the global shortage of the health workforce and the nature of diseases, strengthening and improving health care systems become a necessity. One of the solutions that is recommended by the literature is to utilize advanced practice nurses (APNs) to accelerate the progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals and universal health coverage (UHC). Purpose To delineate APN practice and competencies in relation to UHC and primary care in Jordan from the perspective of nurse administrators, clinical nurse specialist, academics, and policymakers. Procedure A descriptive exploratory survey design was utilized to identify APN competencies that are important in achieving UHC. The survey developed by one of the authors (JH) at a PAHO Collaborating Center to delineate APN practice and APN competencies was adapted and utilized. A convenience sample of 94 nurse leaders was recruited from the education sector, nursing associations, councils, and hospitals. Results The results showed that all four competencies (clinical care; interdisciplinary and patient‐centered communication; systems of care; and using evidence for best practice) were rated as agree/strongly agree across all four domains. There was a consensus of participates on dimensions of all competency domains. Conclusion The current study confirms that the role of APNs is still in its infancy in Jordan. The current study provides nurse educators with baseline information that can be utilized as a framework for APN education programs. The faculty readiness to start new competency‐based APN programs or revise the current graduate programs needs to be assessed.

O desenvolvimento sustentável e a erradicação da pobreza são apontados pela Organização das Nações Unidas como problemas a serem superados até 2030, sendo elencados 17 objetivos visando o desenvolvimento sustentável. Nesse artigo destaca-se o terceiro Objetivo do Desenvolvimento Sustentável (ODS), voltado para a saúde e a promoção do bem-estar para todos, em todas as idades, tendo como prioridade reduzir a taxa de mortalidade neonatal, infantil e materna, bem como as mortes por causas evitáveis de 0 a 75 anos. Os dados analisados mostram-se na contramão aos ODS 3 - saúde, visto que têm aumentado o número de mortes nos anos avaliados, sendo que em 2016 alcançaram os maiores índices do período analisado. Os desafios propostos pelos ODS vão além de contemplar questões que afetam as pessoas, o planeta, a prosperidade e a paz. Os ODS reconhecem que acabar com a pobreza deve acompanhar as estratégias que criam o crescimento econômico e abordam uma série de necessidades sociais, incluindo educação, saúde, proteção social e oportunidades de emprego. Essas ações colocam o Enfermeiro diante de desafios práticos que ultrapassa os âmbitos do hospital e da Unidade Básica de Saúde, exercendo um papel que permita participar das decisões políticas e de gestão dos sistemas de saúde, chamando-os para um papel de liderança e de ações intersetoriais.

Objective: to analyze the nursing research priorities in critical care in Brazil identified by specialists and researchers in the area, as well as to establish the consensus of the topics suggested by the experts. Method: a descriptive study, using the e-Delphi technique in three rounds. The research participants were 116 Brazilian nurses who are experts in critical care in the first round, ending up with 68 participants in the third round of the study. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the demographic variables and the results of the research topics in the second round. In the final analysis, the Kappa agreement coefficient was calculated, comparing the answers between rounds two and three. Results: 63 research topics were generated, grouped into 14 domains of intensive care practice in the first round, and consensus was settled in the subsequent rounds. Topics such as humanization of care (0.56), bloodstream infection control (0.54), and nursing care for polytrauma patients (0.51) were items rated above 0.50 in the agreement analysis between the topics in the two rounds using the Kappa coefficient. Conclusion: this study provides an important guideline for nursing research in critical care in Brazil, guiding for future research efforts in the area.
