Exploitation of Large Archives of ERS and ENVISAT C-Band SAR Data to Characterize Ground Deformations

Abstract: In the last few years, several advances have been made in the use of radar images to detect, map and monitor ground deformations. DInSAR (Differential Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry) and A-DInSAR/PSI (Advanced DInSAR/Persistent Scatterers Interferometry) technologies have been successfully applied in the study of deformation phenomena induced by, for example, active tectonics, volcanic activity, ground water exploitation, mining, and landslides, both at local and regional scales. In this paper, the ex… Show more

“…One of these web tools is the SBAS InSAR service. This service implements the unsupervised P-SBAS algorithm [23,24] that follows the SBAS approach [25], which is a widely-used technique to carry out multi-temporal DInSAR analyses [26][27][28][29]. Inputs of the P-SBAS algorithm are a temporal data set of SAR images of the same region with the same acquisition geometry, the satellite position of all the acquisitions, and the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of the analyzed area [23].…”

“…Several advances have been made, in the last decade, in the use of radar images to map and monitor ground deformations related to geo-hazards in the deferred time. InSAR-based techniques were mainly applied, thanks to the availability of huge historical SAR image archives [8], to measure and monitor ground deformation phenomena that had already occurred. Geoscientists have widely exploited SAR-based information to resolve the spatial distribution and temporal evolution of displacements in areas affected by slow or very slow moving landslides (e.g., [9][10][11][12][13]) or by land subsidence (e.g., [14][15][16][17]).…”

“…The Permanent Scatterers (PS) originate from objects on the surface, whose actual or apparent displacements may arise from a variety of causes (e.g. slope movements, fill settlement, subsurface civil engineering, mining and fluid extraction, differential movements between cut and fill parts of a building site, structure deterioration, expansion/ shrinkage of soils (Colesanti et al 2003;Bovenga et al 2006;Culshaw 2009, Graniczny 2009Hay-Man et al 2009;Tomas et al 2014;Del Ventisette et al 2013)). …”
