Abstract: In order to understand the fracture mechanisms of bone subjected to external force well, an experimental study has been performed on the bovine bone by carrying out the three-point bending test with 3D digital image correlation (DIC) method, which provides a noncontact and full field of displacement measurement. The local strain and damage evolution of the bone has been recorded real time. The results show that the deflection measured by DIC agrees well with that obtained by the displacement sensor of the mech… Show more

“…Combination treatment of dimethyloxalglycine and butyrate improved bone regeneration and angiogenesis concomitant with increasing expression levels of VEGF in a rat model 41 whilst Chen Y. et al . 42 showed that the presence of butyrate increased angiogenesis in diabetic rat hearts, also inhibiting cardiac hypertrophy. It would appear the micro-environmental concentration of sodium butyrate within the tissue might determine its biological activity as we also showed that concentrations above 10 μg/ml were not able any more to stimulate angiogenesis in vitro .…”

“…() in 1999. DVC is a 3D‐extension of the 2D digital image correlation (DIC) technique, a widely employed method for measurement of full‐field displacement and strain fields in a variety of materials subjected to mechanical or thermal loads (Hild & Roux, ; Pan et al ., ; Chen et al ., ; Palanca et al ., ; Hensley et al ., ). For a given material sample under applied load, DIC provides a surface measurement of deformation or strain, whereas DVC is able to provide full‐field displacement and strain fields throughout the interior of the sample in 3D (Bay et al ., ; Bay, ).…”

“…Although time-lapsed mechanical testing and XCT imaging revealed important 3D visual information on the deformation of bone and biomaterial structures, a quantification of the full-field displacement and strain was only achieved with the development of digital volume correlation (DVC) by Bay et al (1999) in 1999. DVC is a 3D-extension of the 2D digital image correlation (DIC) technique, a widely employed method for measurement of full-field displacement and strain fields in a variety of materials subjected to mechanical or thermal loads (Hild & Roux, 2006;Pan et al, 2009;Chen et al, 2015;Palanca et al, 2015;Hensley et al, 2017). For a given material sample under applied load, DIC provides a surface measurement of deformation or strain, whereas DVC is able to provide full-field displacement and strain fields throughout the interior of the sample in 3D (Bay et al, 1999;Bay, 2008).…”

“…Bovine bones, especially bovines shown in Fig. 1, are often used as experimental samples to study the mechanical properties of bones, which is generally viewed as an acceptable surrogate for human bone (Chen et al, 2015). Bovine bones are selected mainly because: (a) The researcher has relatively little further ethical requirement to meet; (b) the close relationship between the mechanical properties of bovine bone and human bone; (c) large size makes it easy to test the whole bone in large-size.…”
