Experimental evidence of genetic determinism in high susceptibility to intestinal pinworm infection in mice: a hybrid zone model

Abstract: In the hybrid zone of the two mouse subspecies Mus musculus musculus and Mus musculus domesticus, mice with hybrid genotypes harbour, on the average, more helminth parasites (cestodes and nematodes) than mice of the two parental taxa. In order to determine the roles played by genetic parameters in this phenomenon, mice with recombined and parental genotypes were experimentally infected with the intestinal pinworm Aspiculuris tetraptera, a natural parasite of the house mouse. The results showed that the high su… Show more

“…The second possible factor is the vague reproductive barrier among the current subspecies. In mice, despite capable hybridization in captivity, the reproductive barrier among subspecies is documented well in the hybrid zone studies (reviewed in Sage et al, 1993), which may be attributed to the potential fitness reduction of the hybrids such as the increased loads of intestinal parasites (Moulia et al. 1993;Sage et al, 1986).…”

“…For example, in the hybrid zone of the two mouse subspecies, Mus musculus musculus and M. musculus domesticus, mice with hybrid genotypes harbor more helminth parasites than mice of the two parental taxa [189]. However, the F1 from these subspecies has higher resistance to parasites than the parental mice [190].…”

“…in a classic laboratory experiment by Park 1948). Second, to examine if over-infection of one taxon as observed in the field has a genetic background, we tested whether the same infection pattern was seen under controlled laboratory conditions where other environmental forces were excluded or were kept constant (as in Moulia et al 1993).…”
