A Case of Schilder's Disease in an Adult With Remarks to the Etiology and Pathogenesis

“…From a histological point of view it is natural to consider the brain damage in our case as allergic----as a n Arthus phenomenon, which in other organs is characterized by local necrosis and inflammation. Experimental allergic brain lesions (Ferrcrro) ( 9 ) a r e characterized by dilatation of the vessels, p e r i u s c u l a r sloughing of tissue or necrosis, and inicroglial phagocytic reaction ; according to this we find perin s c u l a r damaging or disa1)pearance of the oligodendroglial cells and very slight degenerating of the myelin sheaths in the most recent lesions. The destruction of the oligodendroglia and the presence of the swollen astrocytes also suggests a n intoxication, but exclude an infection and identify the pathological process as a degeneration.…”
