Ocular Lesions in Rats Rendered Chronically Diabetic with Streptozotocin

“…This preliminary report concerning eye changes observed in rats rendered chronically diabetic with streptozotocin and in otherwise identically treated control rats confirms previous reports on microvascular changes in diabetic animals [3,7,11,12,14,16,20,23,32,40,46] in that it establishes the occur rence in streptozotocin-diabetic rats of such well-known features as changes in lenticular refraction, cataracts, neovascularisation of the iris, the loss of retinal capillary endothelial and mural cells, and variations in capillary dia meter resulting in the appearance of fusiform aneurysms. The observation, though only in a minority of the diabetic animals, of what appears to be typical saccular aneurysms has, to our knowledge, thus far only been reported in a few instances of induced or spontaneous diabetes mellitus in animals [14,22,35,38]; however, in view of the small number of observations and of animals thus far studied as well as of the short period of observation, the authors prefer the definite identification of these structures as specific capillary lesions re suiting from the diabetic state induced by streptozotocin until the finding has been more amply confirmed.…”

Nonproteinuric Diabetes-Associated Nephropathy in the Cohen Rat Model of Type 2 Diabetes

Of note, though, is that we were able to detect the retinopathy only between 6 and 12 months after initiation of the diabetogenic diet and the appearance of diabetes, while diabetic nephropathy developed earlier.…”

The role of diffusion barriers in determining the excitability of peripheral nerve

“…Thickening of the basement membrane of small blood vessels has been consistently demonstrated in the retina, kidney, skin, stomach, skeletal muscle, vasa vasorum of the aorta, and the vasa nervorum of peripheral nerve (Fagerberg, 1966). The characteristic lesions of diabetic microangiopathy with retinopathy, glomerulosclerosis, and diffuse basement membrane thickening have also been demonstrated in dogs made diabetic by bovine pituitary growth hormone or alloxan (Engerman and Bloodworth, 1965). Spiro (1963) has suggested that the diversion of hexose along insulin independent pathways could result in the over-production of the basement membrane substance and other glycoproteins, which could account for the observed thickening.…”
