Experimental Comparison of PAM, CAP, and DMT Modulations in Phosphorescent White LED Transmission Link

Abstract: In the paper, an experimental comparison of pulse amplitude, carrierless amplitude-phase, and discrete multitone modulations is carried in a visible light communications link employing white phosphorescent light-emitting diode (LED) as a transmitter. By changing the modulation index, the influence of LED nonlinearity on the performance is studied. The results indicate similar performance of pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM) and carrier-less amplitude-phase (CAP) (with a slight advantage of the former) and subst… Show more

“…Comparison of PAM, CAP and DMT modulation in a VLC link using white phosphorescent lightemitting diode (LED) has been reported [36]. At data rates of 450 Gbps on 30 cm air-transmission, 2-level PAM and CAP modulations exhibit better immunity to nonlinear distortions and allow for lower BER than their 4-level counterparts.…”

“…Though traditional DFE requires the least computational complexity, the performance is often unacceptable with a high bit error rate (BER) [4]. Furthermore, the theoretical and simulation studies in [5]- [7] T bit and power loading. Thus, in this study, we proposed an artificial neural network (ANN) for the joint temporal and spatial interference compensation for MIMO-VLC system with PAM scheme.…”

“…Carrierless amplitude and phase modulation (CAP) is one of the spectrally efficient modulation techniques, along with pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), that are employed for improving the achievable throughput in VLC systems [1]. High data rates in the range of Gb/s have been demonstrated for VLC links using the CAP technique [2].…”

“…The main attraction for CAP is its simple transceiver [1]. Early work on CAP have mainly focussed on the design and implementation of equalization techniques to improve its performance [2][3][4].…”
