Experiences with the European guidelines on quality criteria for radiographic images in Tanzania

Abstract: Objective assessment of the quality of radiographic images is practically a difficult task and protocols that address this problem are few. In 1996, the European union published nearly objective image quality criteria to unify the practices in Europe. However, experience with these criteria in countries of lower health care levels is little documented. As a case study in Tanzania, we present the general performance of European guidelines in some Tanzanian hospitals to a total of 200 radiographs obtained from s… Show more

“…97.5% of the total images passed the quality criteria. These findings are related to another study stating that while using the image criteria on ordinary PCs, most chest X-rays and lumber spine X-ray passed by 70% 38 and is supported by results in another study stating that diagnostic value of the radiographic images is highly dependent on the image quality. 39…”

“…15 Surface absorbed dose, which is also known as entrance skin dose, is the amount of energy imparted per gram of tissue at the entrance surface. 16 The European Union has identified surface absorbed dose as the diagnostic reference parameter in optimizing irradiation dose 17 and was therefore used as the measurement for irradiation dose in this study.…”

“…( 3 , 4 ) Quality control is also important in nations that use or intend to use objective assessment of radiological images and international image quality guidelines to unify X‐ray‐imaging practices nationally and internationally. ( 5 , 6 ) The aim of this work is to report on the current status of diagnostic X‐ray machines in Tanzania in order to produce the data required to formulate and implement QC and PM policies and strategies. The impetus for this program came as a result of the concern that the recent increase in the acquisition of X‐ray machines in Tanzania with limited technical support to maintain and operate such equipment can severely undermine the anticipated health benefits from diagnostic X‐ray examinations.…”
