This scoping review aims to investigate the latest literature concerning the use of smartphone applications (apps) in the prevention, management, and monitoring of oral diseases. Smartphone applications are software programs that are designed to run on smartphones. Nowadays, smartphones are regularly used by people of all ages, and mobile health apps (MHAs) represent an important means of spreading information related to oral health, which is the state of the mouth and teeth, including the gums and other tissues. Several apps have been designed to promote prevention, diagnosis, and therapeutic adherence monitoring. This scoping review considered randomized clinical trials, cross-sectional studies, before–after (pre–post) studies with no control group, and observational studies. Once the inclusion and exclusion criteria had been defined, a preliminary confined search was performed on PubMed and Scopus; key terms from the collected articles were selected to design a search strategy, and then a search of all the included articles’ reference lists was run for further research. Studies were excluded if they did not fulfill the inclusion criteria. The preferred reporting items for scoping reviews (PRISMA-ScR) consensus was followed. The risk of bias was evaluated by providing a qualitative analysis of the clinical studies via the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) Quality Assessment of Controlled Intervention Studies, Observational Cohort Studies, and Cross-Sectional Studies (NHLBI, NIH). A total of 21 studies were included in this review. As it is clear from the studies selected, the literature indicates that MHAs are effective in improving oral hygiene in adolescents and children and reducing the dental plaque index, including in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment. MHAs are also able to reduce the symptoms of patients affected by obstructive sleep apnea–hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) and improve the swallowing-related quality of life of elderly patients. MHAs are furthermore recommended to decrease dental anxiety among patients, both during dental procedures and the post-operative period. MHAs are useful to spread knowledge about traumatic dental injuries among non-oral health professionals and to monitor dental erosion and awake bruxism. MHAs’ clinical outcomes might have been influenced by the demographic features of the subjects involved. Further studies considering a longer follow-up period and larger samples are needed. In conclusion, MHAs can be considered a useful tool to monitor oral disease and increase patients’ quality of life related to oral health.

Background: Time and space constraints have often hindered the provision of optimal pharmaceutical care, limiting medication therapy management. Social media tools have gained significant popularity in the field of pharmaceutical care. This study aimed to develop a WeChat-based intelligent medication manager platform that facilitates online pharmaceutical care and encourages self-management.Methods: We developed a WeChat-based Internet pharmacy service platform called Xiang Medicine Guidance (XMG). Through the analysis of surveys and user access data, we evaluated the demand and utilization of the XMG platform and assessed patients’ satisfaction with its services. Patients’ adherence before and after the XMG platform intervention was also investigated.Results: The XMG platform was launched in November 2022, offering medication guidance, reminders, and consultation services through the WeChat mini-program. By the end of April 2023, the platform had attracted 141.2 thousand users, accumulating 571.0 thousand visits. Moreover, 1,183 clients sought online medication consultations during this period. Six months after the launch of XMG, an impressive 91.02% of users expressed their satisfaction with the platform. The medication reminders and consultations provided by XMG significantly contributed to medication adherence, with 56.02% of users categorized as having good adherence, better than the previous 47.26%.Conclusion: Through its services and features, XMG empowers patients to better manage their medications, seek professional advice, and adhere to their prescribed treatment plans. XMG has the potential to positively impact public health on a broader scale.

Background: Severe dental phobia or failure to cooperate with treatment are very common in outpatient pediatric dentistry. Personalized and appropriate noninvasive anesthesia methods can save medical expenses, improve treatment efficiency, reduce the anxiety of children, and improve the satisfaction of nursing staff. Currently, there is little conclusive evidence for noninvasive moderate sedation strategies in pediatric dental surgery. Materials and methods: The trial was conducted from May 2022 to September 2022. Each child was first given midazolam oral solution 0.5 mg·kg −1 , and when the Modified Observer’s Assessment of Alertness and Sedation score reached 4, a biased coin design up-down method was used to adjust the dose of esketamine. The primary outcome was the ED 95 and 95% CI of intranasal esketamine hydrochloride with midazolam 0.5 mg·kg −1 . Secondary outcomes included the onset time of sedation, treatment and awakening times, and the incidence of adverse events. Results: A total of 60 children were enrolled; 53 children were successfully sedated but 7 were not. The ED 95 of intranasal esketamine with 0.5 mg·kg −1 midazolam oral liquid for the treatment of dental caries was 1.99 mg·kg −1 (95% CI 1.95–2.01 mg·kg −1 ). The mean onset time of sedation for all patients was 43.7±6.9 min. 15.0 (10–24.0) min for examination and 89.4±19.5 min for awakening. The incidence of intraoperative nausea and vomiting was 8.3%. Adverse reactions such as transient hypertension and tachycardia occurred during the operations. Conclusion: The ED 95 of intranasal esketamine with 0.5 mg·kg −1 midazolam oral liquid for the outpatient pediatric dentistry procedure under moderate sedation was 1.99 mg·kg −1 . For children aged 2–6 years with dental anxiety who require dental surgery, anesthesiologists may consider using midazolam oral solution combined with esketamine nasal drops for noninvasive sedation after a preoperative anxiety scale evaluation.
