Abstract: Based on recent surveys of the freshwater decapod fauna, distributional data of five exotic species of freshwater decapod crustaceans for the hydrographic basins of the state of Sa˜o Paulo are presented, as part of a large initiative for a comprehensive survey of the state's biodiversity (BIOTA-FAPESP Program). These species are the North American crayfish Procambarus clarkii (Girard) (Cambaridae), the crab Dilocarcinus pagei Stimpson (Trichodactylidae) from the Amazon and Paraguay/lower Parana´River Basins, a… Show more

“…Biological characteristics of Macrobrachium spp. Nauplius, 25: 2017022 The specimens of M. jelskii were identified by the presence of an almost straight rostrum over the orbits, with the distal edge slightly curved upward, and particularly by the inner pair of telson spine overreaching the distal margin of telson (Magalhães et al, 2005). Macrobrachium brasiliense exhibits a straight rostrum reaching just beyond the eyestalk, with the first two teeth of the rostrum dorsal region located behind the eye socket (Melo, 2003).…”

“…Macrobrachium jelskii (Miers, 1877), known as "ghost" shrimp, is a species endemic to South America that despite having a wide distribution is considered exotic in the state of São Paulo (Magalhães et al, 2005). This species has been used as fishing baits and serves as a food source for the riverine population.…”

“…Procambarus clarkii occurrence is also registered for Belize, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico and Venezuela (Huner and Avault, 1979;Huner, 1986;Williams et al, 2001). In Brazil, P. clarkii has 17 established populations, all of them in Southeast Brazil, having been introduced for the aquarium trade and later released into nature accidentally or deliberately (Magalhães et al, 2005;Banci et al, 2013;Loureiro, 2015).…”

“…The knowledge of freshwater decapods in Brazil Atlantic coast has increased during the last decades, especially regarding their taxonomy, distribution (Bond-Buckup and Buckup, 1989;Magalhães, 2003;Magalhães et al, 2005;Mossolin and Mantelatto, 2008;Sampaio et al, 2009;Mossolin et al, 2016;Rocha and Bueno, 2011) and population structure (Ammar et al, 2001;Albertoni et al, 2002;Antunes and Oshiro, 2004;Mossolin and Bueno, 2002;Collins et al, 2006;Mattos and Oshiro, 2009). However, there is a lack of studies assessing effects of stream environmental variables on decapod communities in this area, which restricts our ability to conduct efforts for their conservation.…”
