Existing model metrics and relations to model quality

Abstr act. This paper presents criteria and evaluation methods for evaluating domain-specific modelling (DSM) solutions based on analysing state of the art and experiences of developing and evaluating DSM solutions in research projects. The state-of-the-art analysis returned several requirements regarding the quality of domain-specific modelling languages and tools developed based on them that are classified based on the identified stakeholders. The stakeholders are those who develop and those who use a DSM solution, the intended domain and purposes with developing a DSM solution as defined by domain experts, software engineering concerns, integration with other languages or tools, and the quality of artefacts to be modelled or generated. Both quantitative and qualitative approaches may be applied for evaluating DSM solutions based on the development stage and requirements. There is a clear need for a process that supports evaluating the quality of DSM solutions and this research contributes to the definition of such process.

Instructors often experience difficulties in selecting and sequencing relevant content for deployment into learning management systems. Human error and subjectivity is apparent. This study focuses on integrating learning management systems and massive open online courses with the goal of eliminating the human element in uploading content. As far as data sharing is concerned, learning management systems and massive open online courses have known weaknesses. The proposed integration aims to reach a tradeoff between the two systems. A requirements elicitation exercise was conducted towards identification of the component units of a hybrid system. The study utilized a mixed method approach to realize the foundation of the integrated design model. The findings, based on evaluation, showed that experts established completeness of the software design model. They, however, expressed the need for the designs to be extended towards accommodating artificial intelligence features. The proposed designs, thus, present a baseline framework upon which implementation considerations may be built on.

The Robot Operating System (ROS) is one of the most used software framework to develop robot applications. Although it is possible to reuse packages and code from other ROS projects, ROS applications remain low level and reasoning at a higher level of abstraction is not possible. Using Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) in the context of ROS applications would allow to increase the accessibility of ROS, leverage the reusability of packages and supply validation of the software earlier in the design, using formal methods. For instance, formal verification methods would improve the overall dependability of robotic systems. Our view is that we should increase the abstraction of the systems through models using MDE methodology in order to enable the use of formal methods on ROS applications. In this paper we do a first step toward this and propose a comparative study of existing modeling alternatives aiming to help roboticists to smoothly adopt MDE. This study compares the use of modeling in ROS systems in three different ways: by means of direct UML modeling, a ROS UML profile and a ROS Domain-Specific Language. That allows us to pick the solution that better fits our needs.
